About what bloody_winged said, I don't think it would have made any difference if Aideen had carried the babies. Aideen and Nicholas are twins after all meaning that genetically they are practically the same, each of them equal parts Roy, Ed, and Riza. Nicholas would still be able to recognize parts of himself in the twins because of the genetic similarity between himself and his sister. The only difference would be that he wouldn't be taking this terrible risk. So yes, this was a selfish decision on his part. He just didn't think. You can't blame the man for wanting to save his children's lives but I can glare sternly at Nina for putting Nicholas in this situation to begin with! ;) It is sweet how inspite of how mad Aideen is at Nicholas she still hugs him and loves him! awwww! :)
