I had to admit that I was confused when Maes presented me with a little envelope this morning. Hadn’t I, after all, agreed to go to this ridiculous party? Apparently, that wasn’t enough.

It was going to be a murder mystery party, or so the paper I had been given said. “Wonderful,” I said aloud as I read the description of the character I was to play, along with the little corrections Maes had made throughout. Apparently, there weren’t enough male characters to go around. Even better.

“Roy, here is your character. Ran out of men and I thought this fit too well, regardless.

“Mister Scarlet, a femme fatale (we’ll call him a playboy instead) And stepson of Mrs. Peacock. Of Xingian descent, he was a failed actor and diva. (I stand by that.) Currently, he has a large amount of debt and a shoddy history that includes an affair with Colonel Mustard (I cannot wait to see that one. It’s Havoc, by the way) that if revealed by the one person who knows, Mr. Boddy, he would lose what little career he has.”

From the looks of things, Maes was going to be Mr. Boddy, the victim. I really hoped I got to kill him. I might anyway.

I was surprised to be included in the murder mystery party that Maes Hughes and his wife were throwing. I had to admit I was rather pleased that the lieutenant colonel thinks enough of me to invite me to an event with his friends that surely included Colonel Mustang and some of his closest men. If I were a ladder climber, I think I’d recognize that this was an opportunity for myself.

I opened the invitation and read the description given to me of my would-be character or the night.

“Professor Plum is a middle-aged college professor who, while intelligent in his field of archaeology and in some level of chemistry, he possesses some homicidal tendencies. It is said he killed his wife, Mr. Boddy’s daughter, out of desperation to complete one of his chemistry experiments. He is an expert on poisons.”

I realized I would need to do some research to understand my character more thoroughly and left for the library to find some books on chemistry. I wondered, too, if I should do some thorough study on murderers.

Then it struck me that my character supposedly killed Mr. Boddy’s (Lt. Col. Hughes’) daughter. Somehow, I didn’t think this was going to bode well for me.

I glanced down at the invitation in front of me. I had to wonder just what I’d gotten myself into when I agreed to this dinner party. I was apparently going to be playing a colonel, which amused me, particularly when I realized that the chief wouldn’t be. Apparently, my character for the evening had a history with the Colonel’s. This could be fun.

“A retired military man attempting to write his autobiography, Col. Jack Mustard is desperate to be the person behind the crafting of of his life story. Through a mutual agreement, both Mustard and Miss (This should read Mister. Roy’s Scarlet) Scarlet plan to keep their former dalliances a secret, though Mr. Boddy, as the colonel’s hunting buddy, is aware of the married man’s affair with the actor.”

I wondered if the colonel had any idea of this.

As I watched the man storm out of his office and shoot me a glare, I had to guess the answer was yes.

I looked at the invitation filled with its instructions and rolled my eyes. I could only imagine the kinds of characters that other people were playing, and given Roy’s grumpy attitude as he headed out of the office for a quick “breath of air,” I had a guess that the other characters would be as eccentric as my own.

“Patricia Peacock is a classy social butterfly, though perhaps a better term for her is a black widow. With three disastrous marriages, all ending in the premature and suspicious death of her husband, Mrs. Peacock lives an outrageous lifestyle of decadence provided for her from the inheritance from each of her husband’s deaths. Her latest husband was a close friend of Mr. Boddy.”

A killer? Really? I supposed I could see that. This might be fun after all.

I tried to ignore Lt. Col. Hughes as he repeatedly tapped me on the arm with an envelope, but thankfully, it wasn’t more photos of his daughter or wife. Regardless of how much I respected the love he obviously had for his family, that didn’t mean I wanted to hear about them all the time.

He left shortly after, saying he had only two more of these to deliver, which left me to open the envelope to find instructions for a party I’d nearly forgotten I agreed to attend.

“Mr. John Green is an evangelical minister. With a history for fraud, money laundering and smuggling, his attempts at being a minister have been little more than a cover for his illegal activities. Desperate to keep his legitimate church afloat so his illegitimate business continues, Mr. Green is in search of massive funding.”

I nearly laughed out loud. A minister? Me?

“I believe this last one is for you, my dear,” Maes said as he sat down on the sofa beside me.

“You gave the information to everyone else?”

“The rest of the people have their cards then?” I asked as I took the envelope from him.

“Mm-hmm,” he said as he let me read, his arm around my shoulder.

“A middle-aged cook with a serious grudge against her employer, including a previous love affair gone wrong,” I read aloud before looking back up at my husband with a frown. “Middle aged?”

“I’m a fifty-year-old man, if that helps you any,” Maes said.

“Not really.” I looked again at the murder mystery party set that we had purchased. “And who did you choose to be the beautiful seductress Scarlet?”

“Roy,” he said with a cheeky grin.

“Very appropriate.”

“I thought so. He’s going to be very disappointed when he finds out he doesn’t get to kill me.”

“Shhh...” I hissed at him. “I’m playing along. I don’t want to know the answer.”

“But I have to at least give you an advantage,” he said and kissed me on the lips. “To make up for that ‘love affair gone wrong.’”

I smirked as I stood up from the sofa and wiggled a finger at him. “Want to try to make it go right?”

He let out a happy groan and proceeded to chase me up the stairs. I wondered just how long the role play potential of this party would last.

I could hear them all bickering, trying to figure out who must have been the killer. I watched as well as I could from my place on the floor. I really should have thought this through better when I agreed to be the victim. I’m pretty shitty at playing dead.

“We all know now that it was done with the knife,” Riza said, her tone leaving no room for argument, “which means that Roy was the one closest to the murder weapon before the lights went out. Additionally, he has the greatest motivation to kill Mr. Boddy.”

I watched as Kain Fuery, playing Hogarth Wadsworth, my butler, began tidying up around the house. He was really taking to the part, even more so than my beautiful, wonderful wife, who was busy insisting that Falman was the one who had killed me. “I am telling you that I am innocent. I was halfway across the room wondering what a wrench was doing in your dining room.”

“What about your ministry?” Jean Havoc asked Heymans Breda. “You need money to keep that afloat, don’t you?”

“And what would the people who currently admire you think about the fact that you’ve been sleeping around with our resident ‘femme fatale?’”

“If you don’t want demoted here and now,” Roy, our Miss Scarlet, shouted from across the room, “you won’t say that about me again.”

“I’m going to be here all night,” I muttered, smirking at Fuery.

“Shut up,” Roy said. “You’re dead.”

An hour. They had been debating for an hour and still not figured it out.

“That’s it!” I heard Lt Col. Hughes finally shout from the floor. “My whole body’s going numb.”

“That’s the inconvenience of not actually being dead while lying on the floor for an hour,” Falman pointed out, dryly.

“You all lose. Our murderer gets the prize and I’m going to give it to him gladly.”

Both Lt. Hawkeye and Mrs. Hughes looked very smug because it was very obvious that they were not the culprits as Mrs. Peakcock and Mrs. White.

The Lt. Colonel got off the floor and stretched once or twice before opening the cupboard where a gift certificate and a box of chocolate were sitting, and had been sitting since the party began. He walked by the rest of the guests until he made his way to me.

“Fuery?” Everyone asked in shock. They had been, unintentionally, treating me like part of the scenery for most of the night, which is just what I’d hoped for. I thought, perhaps if they thought I was asked by the Lt. Colonel to help him with this party, they would never suspect that I was the murderer. And I was right.

I was busy opening up the chocolates that both Mrs. Hughes and Lt. Hawkeye had been eyeing through the beginning of the evening and popped one in my mouth with a somewhat smug smile at the rest.

“Of course,” Lt. Col Hughes said. “The butler always does it.”
