The film is essentially a Japanese movie but is being produced by Hollywood and directed by an American. The film has been slated to premiere in the U.S. in 2010. It will be considered Maki’s “Hollywood debut.” For this film, she’ll take on the challenge of speaking in English for the 1st time. With the start of shooting on the 26th, Maki had already begun taking English lessons, studying hard at it. The news articles said that Maki’s very enthusiastic about this movie being filmed in Japan under the supervision of someone abroad. Maki also said this challenge is a rare opportunity and that it’s hard to imagine how the film will turn out, but she’ll concentrate on tackling one scene at a time. While presently playing the lead role in “Innocent Love” and having photographs taken for numerous magazines, Maki continues to work hard on her English studies.
Maki plays Naomi, a high school student in an international school in Japan, who falls down the stairs and loses her memory of the last four years. During her effort to regain her memories, she begins to feel affection for the mysterious Yuji (played by Matsuyama Kenichi), Naomi’s upper senior in school. In the film, about one-third of Naomi’s conversations with her classmates will be in English.
The movie is described as a tale about "painful love" or "sad love." The article also mentioned that Matsuyama's character Yuji (James in the novel) was the one there when Naomi woke up from her fall. Or he was the one who found her at the stairs.
According to the director, he was deeply impressed by Maki’s performance in “Always” and Matsuyama’s in “Death Note” that he casted them both in this movie. He said he greatly admired them and wanted so much to cast them in his film. Rehearsal was done sometime earlier before and the director was so surprised by their terrific chemistry. He feels that Maki and Kenichi both have intelligence and intuition that are necessary to make a powerful duo. One of the articles mentioned that this will be their 3rd time costarring 2gether. The director, Mr. Hans Canosa, had initially planned to film this movie in Hollywood, but thought the story would have more depth involving culture conflicts in a foreign country so he brought the project to Japan.
