[Undecipherable grumbles can be heard over the communicator as Reno comes to and begins to fiddle with it. Needless to say, Reno has turned it on accidentally in a fit of unbridled genius.]

Just what is this thing anyway...? Wonder if it's...

... Use this?

Oh.

[Nervous laughter as Reno lifts the device closer to his mouth]

Hey, Hello?

I have seen no rude men around, but I am certain you will come across one sooner or later!

Nonono, Rude is my partner's name.

He's a big dude, bald and he always wears sunglasses. Pretty hard to miss.

I see! Well, I have seen no rude bald-

[a pause]

...What is a "dude"? I have not heard this word.

[sigh] A dude is a person, usually a guy.

... He's not a rude person, he's actually quite polite... His name is Rude.

So, Rude is a "dude" who is not rude, but polite. And he wears...glasses like the sun? People in your world seem quite strange!

Err, kinda. Sunglasses are dark glasses for blocking out harsh lights, only Rude wears them all the time.

Why would one wear such things in the dark? Would they not be ineffectual and... kahtome?

It's... How do I explain it...? It's to do with image. Your eyes adjust to the change after a bit anyway.

... It's my turn to ask, what's 'kahtome'?

Ah! So he wishes to achieve a certain impression from others, then? Most likely cool, aloof, unconcerned, I would guess?

kahtome... A word from my language. It means that something is impractical to the extent of causing harm. In English...perhaps, cumbersome.

You'd have to ask him, but that's as good a guess as any.

[A long pause; Reno can be heard quietly testing the word out a few times, getting more confident with it each try.]

Kahtome, hm? Your language sounds pretty interesting. Where's it-

... English? Is that what this is?

Perhaps if he arrives, I will do so.

[a small laugh]

You speak it with too much breath. But yes, very close. It is the language of my home, Alantis.

I should think so! It took quite a while to realize that much!

Heh, well. I guess I've got time to learn to get it right.

We don't have an... English, where I'm from. Launguage sounds about the same, though. We just have this and Wutai.

Perhaps! People come and go here, it seems.

What language do you speak, then? How strange that it sounds the same!

Doesn't doesn't have a name s'far as I know. Everyone speaks it across the planet so there's no need to distinguish it. Only Wutai and Ancient get called anything else.

Any chance I could get a name to go with your voice? Unless you don't mind me calling you 'Atlantis,' that is. Mine's Reno.

...I thought all things had names. Your language is an exception to this?

[a short laugh] My name is Kida. It is nice to meet you, Reno.

I suppose it has one. Musta been a way to seperate it from Ancient when it was new, right? There's just not been any incentive to find out what it was. Suppose I could ifwhen I go back.

Ah, and the same to you.
