Each year I arrange a series of outside broadcasts for Glastonbury Radio to give the station some additional exposure and to help promote local events, but sometimes I wonder why I bother lol!
They are always very poorly attended by the local community, such as the Make A Wish Foundation charity fundraiser on July 4thb which drew around 60 people! We raised just over £400 when our target was £2000. (most of that came from visitors to the town!) Such is the lack of support we get from the local community!
Now don't get me wrong, we have a large listening audience, but most are OUTSIDE of Glastonbury, spread across the length and breadth of the UK and around the world. But locally, we get very little support.
This Friday I have been planning an outside broadcast of my worldwide syndicated show Now THAT'S Weird, but no sponsors came forward to cover the £2000 satellite time fee, so I will be pre-recording the show from the Silent Circle Cafe for later broadcast, which is a shame. You would have thought that with all the interest in crop circles right now, someone would have wanted this one to go live!
Glastonbury Radio itself is expanding and some very exciting new projects are planned for this year, but I'm afraid we won't be doing this for the local community, we'll be doing it to promote the town to the world, to bring tourism to the town and to put Glastonbury on the map. Maybe in time, we will bring new people to LIVE in the town who WILL support the work the station and it's volunteers do every week.
As for the new FM station that has been attempting to launch for two years, all I can say is good luck, boy are you going to need it to survive on local money lol!
