Our voting system needs urgent reform
I watched the Conservatives take over the running of Somerset County Council last week from the Liberals and it made me realise that our voting system is CRAP!
The Liberals had done a good job for Somerset, but people don't vote for their local councillor, they vote on issues relating to central government such as "the MP expenses revelations" and their "hate of Gordon Brown" etc.
This is just plain wrong! A local councillor may put in a lot of work for the community over several years and may have done a great job, but then gets voted out because the voter wants to protest about something that has happened in the House of Commons!
I once stood as a candidate for the Liberal Party but I can't say I'm a big supporter of their now, but out of the three main parties, they are the only ones worth voting for!
I was listening to some European Election results yesterday and in one constituency in the North East, the BNP got over 50,000 votes! This is a PROTEST VOTE and nothing to do with who they wanted in the European Parliament, of that I am certain! The BNP is a right wing facist organisation, and it would be like having Adolf Hitler in government! But there are issues about local communities of ethnic races who do not want to fit into the local culture, and "political correctness" that need addressing, which is why they got so many votes.
Whatever your thoughts, and however you voted, let's all call for political reform NOW!!
