I have never been a royalist, I have always thought the Queen did a good job as an Ambassador for the country, but other than that she is a huge expense to the taxpayer.
Today we hear that Prince William and Kate Middleton are to marry in 2011 and move to Wales - good for them, and I offer my congratulations. However, is it time to get rid of the royal family and put the money back into a country that has £4.8 Trillion worth of debt? After all, we are all being told we have to tighten our belts for the rough ride ahead, and yet recently the Queen asked for more help with her heating bills!!
The royal palaces alone would fetch a fortune on the open market, and I'm sure HRH and dappy Philip could make do with a five up - five down in Ascot near the race track! lol
Prince William is 2nd in line to the throne, and many think the Queen will bypass Charles and that William will become our next monarch, although I'm not sure even SHE has the power to do that! I have to say, I quite like William, he has many of his mother's traits and would probably make a good monarch - but do we really need one?
TPUC would argue that without a sovereign, we are left with Parliament running the country under statute law, and that common law would disappear, but I think that has already happened and we are already seeing the governments making crafty little ammendments to statutes to avoid having to pass new laws from scratch. The system therefore, may be broken beyond repair.
I wonder who will be paying for all the pomp of next year's wedding?
