Iron Man 3

Just saw Iron Man 3. Great stuff! Best of the Iron Man films so far, I'd say. Hard to weigh it fairly against Avengers, especially just coming out of the cinema, but it made me equally bouncy, anyway.

[Spoilerish stuff]Pepper and Rhodey both had pretty good roles in this one and got their own moments to kick some ass. I thought the handling of Tony and Pepper's relationship was good too, with some signs of maturity on Tony's part when it comes to actually talking about things. Plus there is Bechdel-test passing in the scenes with Pepper and Maya.

Interesting take on the Extremis storyline - it came off as kind of a remix, the elements all familiar from the comics but put together differently enough to be less predictable. I was waiting for something to happen that didn't, so I was wrong-footed about where it was going for a while.

The Mandarin reveal - which I will not spoil even under spoiler cut - was a spectacular idea. Absolute genius. I loved it. (And the whining of indignant comic book purists on various boards only makes it sweeter. Mwahahahaha.)

The one thing I wasn't sure about was the voiceover framing, but the post-credits scene totally turned that on its head and made it work. (Also, canonphiles, we have a date reference for Tony's age from that scene: he says he was 14 in 1983, which would make him a handful of years younger than RDJ and currently 44.)

PS: the post-credits scene is right at the end of the credits this time. (I feel bad for the poor cinema staff, who came in to clear up for the next showing and found three quarters of the audience still hanging around.) But well worth waiting for if you've got the time.

Great film! Enjoyed it thoroughly.
