Before the Invasion, she would have turned to her father no matter what she was going through. She was daddy's girl, and she learned so very much from him. He taught her how to fight and how to use a gun. He told her stories and old histories of the family. Despite her mother telling them that it was way past their bedtime, Melanie and Jamie would sit with their father and talk about all kinds of things long into the night.

That's how life was now, divided into two sections: Before The Invasion and After The Invasion.
After the Invasion when they realized what had happened to their parents, Melanie and Jamie had started running. They never stayed in one place too long as they searched for what could be a safe haven for them. What did they know of surviving on their own when Melanie was still a teenager herself?
She and Jamie relied on her and she knew that she had to find a safe place for her and Jamie to hide. A place where the Souls couldn't find them. Maybe they'd find Uncle Jeb and see that he had escaped the Invasion, too. After all, he had been the one to warn their dad.
Then, she met Jared. Jared was the first human that she had seen in so long and after the first time he kissed her, she had been affected.
It didn't take long for her to start turning to Jared with everything.
It was something that didn't change even after she was taken and Wanderer led them back to him.
