Thoughts on Thanksgiving

I know it's a little late, but here's my list of what I'm thankful for this year:

I'm thankful for my car. After visiting my parents and realizing how much life sucks without one, I'm very thankful for my shiny new one. Going home was hard. Key West looked a lot worse than I expected it to. I think the hardest part was that there has been absolutely zero coverage of Hurricane Wilma impact on the Keys, so I really had no idea what to expect. Take Katrina for example, seeing repeated images of your hometown flooded out might be extremely painful to watch, but after 1,000 viewings, you start to become numb to it. I didn't have that luxury, since I hadn't seen ANY images of washed-out Key West. Let me just say it was bad. I'm thankful I don't have to face the reality of it everyday like my family does.

I'm thankful for strong bones. On day 3 of my vay-cay, Granny feel down and broke her hip. Well, first she broke it, then there was no damage just bruising, then there were mini-fractures, then it was broken again, and now we have no idea what the heck these doctors are talking about. It's been 2 weeks today and we still don't know officially what is wrong with her. I'm thankful I don't have to visit doctors in Key West.

I'm thankful to be able to breathe again. When you work with kids, you can easily catch bronchitis, as I did on the last day before break. I was miserably sick for 10 days and the two hairy dogs that insisted on sleeping with me every night were not helping. I'm thankful to be sleeping in a place with a working latch on the door to keep out unwanted pests/pets. ;-)

I'm thankful for the opportunity to escape. I may not have a super-thrilling life here in Lakeland, but at least I have one. As much as Key West will always be a part of my heart, my true home, I find it incredibly suffocating. It's wonderful to be back here, in a place where I can be a grown-up, make my own decisions, break free from the restraints of living in a small town. I'm thankful to be on my own.

I'm thankful that you're reading this! I know I've been really bad lately, and the few things that I have posted haven't exactly been scintillating news, but thanks for sticking around anyways. I'm thankful for friends like you!

Gobble, Gobble,
Jen
