Dead By Sunset

I recently finished my lastest Ann Rule book, Dead By Sunset. It's the story of Cheryl Keeton and Brad Cunningham and their bitter divorce that ends with her dead on the Sunset Highway. She leaves a note and tells her mother, as she goes to pick up her boys from a weekend visitation, that if she doesn't return, Brad killed her. This is a heart-wrenching story because she was a top lawyer in Portland, OR and was his fourth wife. He has a pattern of abusing women verbally and physically and using any children, especially boys, as pawns. However, he can't let them go because he also uses them financially.

It took eight years and a civil and criminal trial to convict Brad, but after a circus-life trial, in which he defended himself, Brad was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. However, a recent update is that he may get a new trial because Cheryl's note to her brother and call to her mother are being declared heresay, not dying declarations.
