i'm working at macy's now. it's a shit job with shit hours with just-slightly-warmer-than-shit pay. it is required that i join the UFCW union in order to get paid. it is required that i join the UFCW to keep my job.
let's peruse the reasons why i got this job, one where i work from either 4pm-1am or from 8pm-1am in the loading/receiving docks at macy's with zombie co-workers and sickeningly monochromatic mall music.
for money. i have none. this job gives me 15 hours a week and at my hourly wage, that's just enough to cover my part of rent.
back to the union. it is absolutely pertinant to my keeping employment that i join. i have no choice. to macy's credit, upon my hiring i was informed there would be some entry dues to this union. i thought it kind of a bummer, but i wasn't (and probably still am not) in any position to complain - i need(ed) work. the bosslady told me the union would be sending a packet of information to peruse.
i recieved this packet a few days ago, let it brood and marinate in procrastination on the top of my dresser, and out of sheer uninterested curiosity, opened it tonight after getting back from work. enclosed is a bill for $154.
thus not only entirely negating my as of yet unrecieved first check, but also putting me into the union's pocket as my check will not cover this amount of money. i am now paying to work a shit job with shit hours with, what now turns out to be, just-slightly-cooler-than-shit pay.
on the other hand, i am getting very favorable feedback from Express and am going in for an interview tomorrow. if i resign from macy's within 30 days, methinks i won't have to pay this union fee.
...
as of now, my bike is officially up for sale.
