I don't have Word on my home computer so I am typing this into here so that I can copy and paste once I get to work tomorrow, plus I thought it might be fun and interesting to share this info with you, my audience. enjoy.
1. Why would you like to be a docent at NOMA?
I would like to be a docent for NOMA for several reasons, the first of which is that I LOVE NOMA. I love being in the building, I love being surrounded by the art and I love the idea of being a part of the NOMA family. Secondly, I am interested in my own personal development and the continued education that the docent program will bring to my life. And, finally, I am excited to share my interest in, and, passion for art and the museum.
2. Please describe your educational background.
My formal education background includes a BA from UNO, as well as an AA from Delgado Community College. Both of my degrees are in General Studies. My BA was a focus in Art's Administration which was a balance of Art History and Business Administration.
3. What related experience will you bring to your position as a docent, including work and volunteer experiences, as well as hobbies or interests?
My informal education includes 23 years of working all aspects of the retail experience at Whole Foods Market where I am currently a member of the Customer Service team. During my last semesters at UNO I held internships at the CAC working under Doug MacCash, and also at Hansen Gallery on Royal St. under Angela King, which allowed me exposure to both museum and retail art gallery 'behind the scene' experiences. I have worked numerous fund-raising events at NOMA and City Park through Whole Foods. In addition, I have a very large circle of creative friends and associates, I coordinate a small art show in my home every year during Jazz Fest, and one of my favorite things to do while traveling is to visit any and all museums.
4. Please tell us about any other skills, such as fluency in another language, that you think will assist you as a docent.
My 'special skills' would include my understanding of art, my capacity to deal with the public, and, the ability to be on my feet for hours at a time.
5. Please describe your experience working with people of various ages, cultural backgrounds or people with disabilities.
Working for the world's largest natural food retailer has given me experience working with people from many cultures, diverse backgrounds and various ages. My fellow employees, as well as our guests, have exposed me to a spectrum of diversity.
6. How did you hear about the docent program?
I became aware of the docent program last year though an e-mail from the Faughbourg St. John Neighborhood Association. I considered applying but my work schedule wouldn't allow it. Last Monday I opened an e-mail from NOMA and was excited to see the program was about to start again. My schedule is more flexible now, and I haven't stopped thinking about the possibilities since I read that very first e-mail.
7. What are your expectations concerning docent training and being a docent?
My expectations are simple. I expect to meet some like-minded folks, I expect to learn some great information and some new skills, and I expect to love the whole experience.
