I've decided the best way to get my feet wet in writing Batman fic would be to do drabbles centered on various characters, to get a feel for characterization/setting. I've decided to group these drabbles as a series, which I'm calling "Essences."
Title: Entanglements
Character: Batman
Rating: PG
Word Count: 100
Summary: Essences #1
He tries not to remember how he became this entangled. So many ties, so many loose ends. Lost soldiers and broken lives, all piling up around him endlessly.
Batman is no longer a solitary element.
But sometimes- when Nightwing proves himself a man all over again, but still with that young acrobat’s smile on his face, or the rare times when Robin cracks a joke while precisely taking down foes, when Oracle teasingly offers him the missing piece of the puzzle or Batgirl simply laughs aloud as though it was her natural response- sometimes, he’s proud of what he’s built.

Title: Liberation
Character: Catwoman
Rating: PG
Word Count: 100
Summary: Essences #2
Selena knows survival. Knows the bitter taste of abandoning all pretense of civilization to do what is necessary.
Stealing isn’t survival for her. It’s liberation.
She wonders sometimes if she’ll ever feel as whole as she does when sliding the perfect artifact out of its supposedly secure case, or draping stolen diamonds around her neck and just watching them sparkle. Wonders why the catsuit feels like an extension of her body. Why figuring out someone else’s combination gives her shivers.
Maybe she really is a cat, making her own rules and obeying only herself.
She thinks this life suits her.
