This is a post about vampire music.

First off, ♥ to the comments I got left on the anon love meme... I feel weird replying to anon comments where I doubt you'd see it, so instead, I'm saying here that you made my day. <333

On a completely different topic!

When I was writing my Pete/Mikey/Alicia vampire fic, I made the off comment to someone that my vampire playlist (titled, if you're wondering, "Vampires Will Never Hurt You") was actually finally coming in useful. I then discovered that not everyone has a vampire playlist!

I love mine. (I don't even care that I'm outting myself as a very specific type of geek here -- yes, I spent a lot of time in high school reading Anne Rice and Poppy Z Brite and stuff like that.) Some of the songs' connections to vampires are tenuous at best, and some probably only make sense to me, while others are explicitly vampiric in nature.

For instance, Concrete Blonde's "Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)" (wma) is pretty much as blatantly vampiric as you're going to get. Oh, you were a vampire, and now I am nothing at all. The slow steady transformation into a vampire, the chorus with it strolls around New Orleans and tongue-in-cheek references to having a drink, the crooning lyrics that pretty much illustrate in audio form what fascinates me about the vampire/victim relationship. (The sexual overtones to everything, the sacrificial nature of the relationship, the power imbalance, the promise of eternity. It's fascinating stuff!)

Another classic on that front would be Echo and the Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon.".(mp3) The killing time, unwillingly mine and He will wait until you give yourself to him just strike me as hitting on the head the interesting dynamic of vampire/victim - it's about seduction.

The Toadies - Possum Kingdom (mp3) is another song that brings the seduction aspect to the forefront, although here it's much creepier and psychotic. Don't be afraid, I didn't mean to scare you, so help me Jesus. I can promise you, you will stay as beautiful with dark hair and soft skin, forever. Man, the menace that is put into the forever.

Sometimes, there's just a dark creeping element to the song that puts me in the mindset of vampire stories. Sonic Youth - Shadow of a Doubt (wma), for instance, just feels right. The whispered lyrics, the the way that contrasts with the slow dark music... perfection. Must've been a dream /from a thousand years ago / kiss me / kiss me in the shadow of a doubt

Finch - Bitemarks and Bloodstains (mp3). Bloodlust, bloodlust, for this girl. Bloodloss, bloodloss, for this boy. This is forever. I really love this song. I mostly just wanted to quote all the lyrics, from the chorus of Now I'm stealing her body and taking it home on, but I'm going to restrain myself. (Actually, a lot of the Say Hello to Sunshine disc could be included on my playlist, now that I think about it.)

Future Bible Heroes - I'm a Vampire (mp3) - I mostly like this one because it's a techno-y happy rejoicing in being a vampire. It has lyrics like Damn, I am what I am what I am, and I am impossibly glam, and I'm as happy as a clam, cuz I'm a vampire!. It rhymes blanch with bloodflow no one could staunch. Just... ♥

I could go on and on, but I'll stop here. Lots of the others are obvious choices - Bauhaus, the Queen of the Damned soundtrack, "Vampires Will Never Hurt You" by MCR, ect. (If anyone wants to know my other vampires songs/wants an upload of one, or need me to convert one of the ones here, just ask, I'm happy to share the love.)

I'll close this out with something a little less pro-vampire, I think.

Bad Brains - Fearless Vampire Killers. (mp3)

If you have any awesome vampire songs to share, feel free! :D
