The thing Ginny cherished the most, really, was the look on Draco’s face when she invited him to celebrate Christmas at the Burrow. Blind panic plus a bit of cunning that she didn’t quite know what to think of at the time.
He’d been unable to come up with a polite refusal, and she blithely ignored the impolite ones, and so they ended up in the cramped living room of the Burrow on Christmas afternoon.
Ginny acknowledged for the first time that Narcissa had done a fine job rearing her son when Draco opened his present, a plain, bulky jumper made of purple and orange yarn, and did not cringe, or insult it. Instead, he smiled and graciously thanked her mother for going to such effort to make him feel like part of the family, especially now that he was actually going to be.
“What?” chorused nine Weasleys.
Ginny’s entire body had gone numb, but she thought her mouth might be hanging open in an extremely undignified manner. “What exactly does that mean?” she finally managed.
“Well, I hardly would have subjected myself to this unless there were some sort of permanent arrangement likely,” Draco said. His hair was mussed from pulling on the sweater, and he shoved it back in place. “I thought that was understood.”
“Oh,” Ginny said. “Well, I suppose that’s alright.”
She somehow managed to ignore the disbelieving murmurs of family and friends, and pecked Draco on the cheek. “I expect a truly extravagant proposal, of course.”
Draco gave her that half-smile she adored so, and replied, “Like I would do anything less.”
