Fic: Showmanship and Compensation (Essences 5 & 6)

Dec 06, 2006 19:42

Continuing my quest to drabble my way through the Batverse.

Title: Showmanship
Character: Nightwing
Rating: PG
Word count: 100
Summary: Essences #5

Sometimes, when he’s fighting, Dick thinks he might still be in the center ring of the circus. He does twists and flips that would have made the audience cheer, and for the barest moment of time, imagines applause as he wins.

He sometimes wonders if he would be happier with circus life, nomadic and surrounded by a constant crowd of strangers. He remembers making people happy instead of causing criminals pain. Bright lights instead of shadows.

That’s too simple for him now, he thinks. Without the mission, he is lost.

He convinces himself of this and dreams of the limelight.

Title: Compensation
Character: Oracle
Rating: PG
Word count: 100
Summary: Essences #6

Barbara thinks, on occasion, that she controls the universe. That she has gained the world-domineering power that so many lose life and sanity over.

Like when her filtered voice tells Superman where to go.

Or when she’s just averted a major catastrophe that no one will ever know about but her.

But when her pen rolls under the desk and her straining arms simply cannot reach, or someone forgets and puts the creamer on the top shelf in the cabinet-

Then, she knows she’s just another broken girl, grasping at what power she can to compensate for all she’s lost.
