Q1. What do you think you are in charge of (in the group)?
Ryo: The members tease me and tell me I’m flashy.
Mizuki: Singing.
Yuto: Eyebrow thickness.
Sakuma: Height.
Igari: Saying no to things we don’t want to do.
Q2. Tell us something recent that made you feel ➀ happy ➁ lame?
Ryo: ➀ I went to karaoke for the first time in a while with 7 of my high school friends. ➁ I planned to treat my kouhai to yakiniku but I didn’t have enough money.
Mizuki: ➀ January’s play was the first time I managed to get through a play without getting sick. ➁ When I was at the salon I dozed off during the shampoo and then was shocked awake.
Yuto: ➀ I got my driving license in January. ➁ In the picture on my license I have bed hair even though I made sure to set it.
Sakuma: ➀ Being able to be in Non-no magazine! ➁ When I was onstage I had a solo part on roller skates and I almost fell over.
Igari: ➀ I got New Year money from Kishi kun. He was very reluctant but he eventually gave it to me (laugh). ➁ I thought Yonezu Kenshi san’s name was Gensui.
Q3. Tell us what you’re into lately?
Ryo: Growing my hair.
Mizuki: Watching movies to learn about acting. I watched [Masquerade Hotel] and [12 nin no shinitai kodomotachi].
Yuto: Watching the anime [Prince of Tennis]. I learned more about the rules of tennis so I was able to appreciate how amazing Osaka Naomi was even more!
Sakuma: I started practising the piano again like I used to when I was little.
Igari: Chess. I’m still learning so I’m looking for someone to teach me.
Q4. What is something that girls do that makes you feel ➀ excited ➁ disillusioned?
Ryo: ➀ When a girl with short hair does her best to put it up, that’s really cute ♡ ➁When they walk and talk like an old man it’s kind of unfortunate.
Mizuki: ➀ When they smell nice. ➁ When their phone manners are bad.
Yuto: ➀ When they smile brightly and smell nice. ➁ When they’re wearing cute clothes but they cross their legs.
Sakuma: ➀ When they usually wear their hair down but they put it up or when they usually wear it up but leave it down. ➁ People who sit in the priority seats on the train when they don’t need them.
Igari: ➀ When they drink from plastic bottles still in the convenience store bag. It’s cute that they can’t be bothered to take it out of the bag. Also when they’re eating alone and they say “itadakimasu” quietly. ➁ When they have messy handwriting.
Q5. If you were to date someone how would you want it to happen?
Ryo: I want an older woman to prompt me with “So are we gonna date or not?” (laugh).
Mizuki: I want to fall in love at first sight and just confess right there.
Yuto: I want to be able to use my intuition and get the timing for the confession right.
Sakuma: I want it to be a girl that I’m already close to and before we realise it we’re in love. Once I realise that she feels the same we’d be able to start dating safely (laugh).
Igari: I want someone to confess to me. I want them to take the initiative.
Q6. Tell us your ideal date plan?
Ryo: I’d remember somewhere my girlfriend casually said she wanted to go and make it become a reality as a surprise.
Mizuki: Shopping, the movies, illuminations…I aim to have a so called normal date.
Yuto: We’d go see a movie in Minato Mirai and then eat dinner in a mall food court.
Sakuma: We’d only decide the destination, after that we’d do whatever we felt like.
Igari: We’d meet at my house and finish at my house. Just going to the convenience store in our room wear is enough.
Q7. When do you feel [Hi]?
Ryo: When the other members and fans are pumped up I get excited too.
Mizuki: When I’m on stage. I can never forget the time we held hands and did flying all together during DREAM BOYS.
Yuto: I get excited when we get new work to do.
Sakuma: When everyone around me gets sleepy. My mood is the opposite of everyone else (laugh).
Igari: When I’m overly tired.
What is your appeal point that you won’t lose to the other two groups (Bishounen and Naniwa Danshi) in?
Yuto: Our strength is in performing on roller skates!
Igari: We can show the sprinting feeling that you can’t express with regular dancing.
Ryo: However, it’s embarrassing when we fall over (laugh).
Mizuki: We’ve already failed a ton of times.
Igari: The most obvious one was…
All: Music Station! (Editor’s note: In 2016 when they were known as HiHi JET there was a happening during their performance)
Mizuki: It’s still funny to watch that now.
Sakuma: Now when the choreographer is deciding moves for us we all check the condition of the floor we’ll be performing on together.
Ryo: Also the other 2 groups (Bishounen and Naniwa Danshi) are sparkly, cute, proper idols but I think we’re quite wild and cool.
Yuto: During lives too, we aim to make the fans get involved and not just stand and watch.
Ryo: We also try to be funny.
Igari: If they tell us we can do a 15 minute MC, we’ll do 40 minutes.
Sakuma: We’re so free (laugh).
Igari: To understand us better, please watch our rehearsal videos on our Johnny’s Jr YouTube channel. We did one where we were falling over and couldn’t get our skates on but once the song starts we suddenly started doing it properly. It’s because you need to be both cool and funny to appeal to girls.
Yuto: …so basically we’re the kind of group that will praise ourselves (laugh).
Mizuki: First of all it’s important that the 5 of us are known by lots of different people.
Sakuma: This is the first time we’ve been in Non-no magazine and I hope we get more and more opportunities like this.
Yuto: And our aim is the New National Stadium!
Igari: Just like the athletes are aiming to appear at the Olympics, we’re aiming to stand on the ground of the New National Stadium in a different way!
