Despite how sleep-inducing these new shows sound, I do like to check out new anime from these studios; Bones, JC Staff and Shaft.
Gosick 1! Embrace the engrish...
+ Decent production
+ Grevil has the best hairstyle this season
- Unimpressive episode 1
+ but cute
Quick impression~ A new transfer student, Kujo-something, nicknamed the 'kuro shinigami' by the others, meets a female student, Victorique, who solves mysteries for a local police inspector, Grevil. She uses him to amuse herself. I think this will amuse the fans who miss the Victorian cosplay opps from Kuroshitsuji. In episode 1, they try to solve a murder of a rabbit-raising fortune teller. The maid did it, but there's a twist to be seen in the next episode.
Yumekui Merry 1! I was temporarily excited for this manga to be animated, but then realized it's not
Yumekui Kenbun; it's
Yumekui Merry.
+/- uneven production
- generic characters thus far
- forgettable op/ed songs
+ cats in boots
Quick impression~ A young boy, Yumeji, can see dream auras. He has dreams where cats are attacking him. One day he meets Merry, a girl who can't remember her past, who saves him from the cats. There were moments of really nice animation and then some cheapo scenes. The orchestral bgm was nice at times, too; an interesting string tune during the cat scenes..haha. Overall, unimpressive.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica 1! more impressive dreams...
+ Excellent production
- but the character animation can get cheap at times
- forgettable op/ed songs
- generic characters
Quick impression~ The scene with the kids and their mother was very cute. I like how the classes are in cage-like structures. Anyway, a young, pink-haired girl has a dream about another girl fighting something. The next day, the other girl is a new student in her class who says mysterious things to pink-haired girl. A dream-like reality appears and moustached cotton balls attack. A magical shoujo saves the day, and her cat-like creature wants to make pink-haired girl and her friend magical, too. SHAFT's interpretation of a magical girl show is visually cool, but outside the visuals, the story was dull. The pink-haired girl is your typical ditzy, timid character who all the lesbian characters want to grope and hug.
Tegami Bachi: REVERSE 14! the start of the second half of the season with a new opening. Yay for a new Suga Shikao song, but the visuals were lacking. The ending visuals featured cute chibis. This episode explains what happened on the day that the artificial sun stole body parts and hearts from people looking at it from the perspective of a mechanic. Lag has a weird seizure. Gauche wakes up.
