Time to sample new dramas...
Beethoven Virus 1-2! kdrama. Hey, it's been awhile...high school probably..since I've heard the Bugler's Holiday. Episode 1 & 2 were surprisingly good. Based on the trailers, I thought the series would be a drama's drama, but because of the personality of the female lead, there are some light moments.
The characters: Du Ru Mi (haha..doremi, but actually is some sort of nice bird) is a 'feisty' young woman who organizes an orchestra for a cultural festival and plays the violin; Kang Gun-woo is a serious young police officer who plays the trumpet, but was turned off of classical music at a young age by-->; Kang Gun-woo (yes, the same name...totally confused me) is Chiaki the older conductor who has a huge stick up his arse and a very pretty dog named Thovenia(sp?).
The story: (yeah, sounds like Nodame Cantabile with an older cast) A strict conductor known as the 'orchestra killer' tries to take on a haphazardly put together orchestra whose musicians have issues. After shunning the orchestra's mediocrity, he gets spurred on when he sees a childhood rival on tv being more successful than he is.
Quick impression: Surprisingly, it wasn't as snooze-inducing as the trailers suggested. The background music is a mix of pop, classical and pop-classical which is an attractive variety. The pacing was pretty quick. The summaries seem to indicate that there will be a love triangle with the 3 main characters. Maestro Kang seems a bit old for Du Ru Mi, but kdramas seem to like pairing up older guys with young women. Jang Geun Suk plays the trumpeter, Gun-woo. I recognize him from as Hwangjiny's first love in that drama...and although I was thoroughly blahed by him in that drama, this role suits him. The dog is lovely. After humanizing Kang, he cracks the whip making the musicians cry. His snobbery is amusing. His tongue-lashings are pretty harsh. Likewise, Du Ru Mi also seems to bite hard when pissed off. I hope the writers focus on that part of her personality rather than the timid female part. I also hope it continues in this mostly lighthearted fashion. Oh yeah, don't expect the actors to be convincing while playing their instruments...Gun-woo needs to practice more..haha.
