Rarely Sometimes I like to watch shows that are not hyped, do not feature pretty boys and do not take place in elite high schools.

Ushi ni Negai wo: Love & Farm episode 1 jdrama. This features a few familiar actors; Tamayama Tetsuji (Takumi from Nana), Koide Keisuke (Masumi from Nodame...wow, he looks like a normal cute guy), Karina (from Bambino), Toda Erika (Misa from Death Note) and a bunch of others. They all attend Kantou University and as part of their agricultural studies, go on an internship to a farm.

Tamayama plays the playboy-like, aloof student who is also a manager of a coffee cafe and the hope of his family farm & community, Takashimizu. His special characteristic is that he runs from stressful situations. There's a variety of students including the stock genki girl, lazy princess and weird boy. In the first episode genki girl makes a mistake and ruins the supply of milk, Takashimizu declares that he is quitting school & that the town sucks, his mother collapses, a cow goes into labor, and the students gaze at Takashimizu with adoration when he delivers it.

It's pretty admirable and very interesting that the show focuses on the hardship of farm communities. I enjoy a show that can cover important issues in an entertaining manner. Al Gore would be proud. The landscape is pretty and the animals are quite charming. Was that a real delivery? Is that how they deliver baby cows?! eep! The mood of the show was a mixture of comedy and seriousness and also inappropriate humor in serious situations. I look forward to more of this and not because Tamayama looks like he stepped out of a Ralph Lauren or Gap ad.

Note to myself: I also want to check out Hotaru no Hikari.
