What I learned from watching today's drama:
Japan will take over the world with their pretty boys from elite schools. And I don't mind.
Yamada Taro Monogatari episode 1 jdrama! It's goofy.
Ninomiya Kazunari from Arashi plays poor prince Yamada Taro while Sakurai Sho from Arashi plays rich prince Mimura Takuya. Of course the opening song is "Happiness" by Arashi. Taro and Takuya are the 'princes' of an elite school. Taro spends his freetime providing for his 6 siblings and mother while Takuya spends his time flower arranging.
In the first episode, Taro is on a quest to get croquette for his little sister's birthday. Takuya seems like a snob at first, but becomes Taro's friend and gets him out of troublesome situations. Other players include a female classmate that likes Taro and a big-nosed boy who is jealous of him.
The production is decent with soft pastel lighting. There are cheesy special effects. The humor is on the same level as the old sitcom, Full House, where everyone is optimistic about everything and tears up when good fortune comes their way.
The original manga started off with Taro feeding his family pancakes made out of opium or some other narcotic. They laughed it off as it had no effect because they were so poor and starved. I guess that wasn't so appropriate for the live-action version. Not sure how closely the rest of the series will follow the manga, but Taro gets to cross-dress in the next episode. None of the actors really impressed me, but it was silly enough to be entertaining and maybe I'll watch more.
