Balancing act

Tried to balance equal amounts of lecture time with fun this weekend.

Honey & Clover live-action jmovie! (fyi: I saw that the dvd straight rip was out, but it was impossibly too large, then it popped up at the jdrama com which led me to a great clubbox hunt, so I wouldn't have to put up with MU...in case you were wondering.) This movie is expectedly a slice-of-life film featuring college art students on the verge of adulthood.

Summary and impression~ based on the manga, Honey & Clover, Takemoto, Morita, Hagu, Yamada & Mayama, all art students, meet and become friends. The movie runs about 2 hours and the slow-angsty parts are nicely moved through by Yoko Kanno's music. The downside to all the relationship angst is that there was no charming comedy that created the initial projection of a great friendship. The group never felt as close as they did as in the anime. There was cute rough-housing on the beach (which they never got to in the anime), but that's about all the comedy you get. I think this is one of those jmovies that needs the audience's familiarity with the original work for it to succeed the best and even then, it's still a tiny bit disappointing. I'm sad they didn't get to look for 4-leaf clovers together. Lesson? unrequited love sucks...but try your best anyway.
~7/10 rating~

Himitsu no Hanazono 2! features a day-in-the-life of 4 brothers who create shoujo manga. For some reason I thought the otaku brother was the eldest; my bad, he's not. Anyway, it was a cute episode as they tease their new editor/magazine rep(?) some more. The actors play stereotypes (otaku, serious-type, hot-type, angsty teen), but it's fun to watch. Btw, the actor who plays the eldest brother also did Hanamoto-sensei in the Honey & Clover movie. Not quite an outstanding actor..and I keep associating him with the annoying part he played in Engine, but I'm sure he's not that bad.

Hana Yori Dango S2 3! Can't help but laugh at Rui's white shoes...elves have NoTHinG on him. Domyoji's dream becomes more clear and we see into his mother's problems. Onto the more important things like: Are Domyoji's eyebrow's nicer than they were last season? He has nice, sparkley nail polish, too. For a poor person, Makino has really adorable clothes. And why are Sojiro & Yuki cute even though together, they are extremely dull. Speaking of cute...Akira's family!!!
