July poetry, day 1

Jul 01, 2009 23:59

Remember last February when I wrote a poem a day for a month? And gave up halfway through, but managed to get like, 2 good poems out of it? I am going to try that again, except this time with a month that has The Most Days Possible so oh my what a challenge for myself. I will be a writer again, I will.

Here is a very depressing and moderately bad one to kick things off. I'm really sorry.
For the record, I felt pretty cheerful today.

~

i. The cure for salt

Secret cigarettes & the sigh of the rain.
Swallow until your brain
becomes numb with the humming
and familiar fog.
Do not attempt to explain.
Allow them to carry you
away to a small room, a safe room,
dim and never dark, blanket-cool
and summer-soft. Here you will sleep.
You will forget what it is to
feel fiercely. The hands which once
pulled on your heart until
it split spilling pretty words & paint
will instead curl around your drowsy face.
You will not resist. All effort is too great.
And as your eyes turn the grey of the drugs in your veins
you will remember that
such great heights
were worth the
low low lows.
