Resolution Table. #55 - Jealous
(This changed what it wanted to be halfway through and I had no choice but to be swept along for the ride.)
Deryn doesn’t have a leg to stand on and she knows it.
Lilit is useful to have around, that’s for certain; she’s a good pilot, she speaks several languages, she’s practical, hard-working and intelligent. In any other circumstances, Deryn knows they could have been pretty good friends.
But no, in these circumstances, the only circumstances where they could have met, Deryn can’t wait to see the back of her.
At first, it was really just simple jealousy towards a potential rival for Alek’s attention. Well, that was pretty indefensible - it was her own problem Alek thought she was male. Lilit was just the coming of the inevitable. Deryn accepted that.
But what really bothered Deryn was that Lilit didn’t have to hide. She could be a brilliant mechanic, revolutionary or pilot and she could still be herself. She might have some strange political ideals, but the equality issue was one Deryn could probably get behind. She didn’t dislike being female, it was just barking inconvenient sometimes. She almost resents Lilit for the freedom she has but then, that’s not really fair. If anything, Deryn thinks, she should be grateful that there’s more than one woman in the world with the freedom to show everyone what they’re capable of.
Essentially, she's a reminder of everything Deryn can't have.
