((OOC: Yeah, Zio's trying Badd again. The profile is in a cut below and to save space, you can leave your criticism related to how I'm ruining characters you like here.))
Name: Tyrell Badd
Age: 53 in AAI case 4, 60 in Case 5.
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Single. Chasing people for years on hand tends to keep one a bachelor. (Or in other words, too hardboiled to fall in love.)
Sexuality: Straight.
Occupation: Former Homicide detective; now unemployed as a result of being in jail.
Connections
Friends
Kay Faraday: The daughter of Badd’s friend, Byrne. Badd knew Kay ever since she was born. Though the two didn’t see much of each other after Byrne was killed what with the girl being sent to live with her mother’s family and Badd chasing down leads. Though they were reunited when Kay was being held at gunpoint by her father’s killer and Badd interceded (though he was not technically the one to save her.)
Byrne Faraday: Badd knew the (now deceased) prosecutor ever since Badd was a rookie, working together on many cases (in fact, Byrne was the only prosecutor at the time that Badd liked) as well as being two-thirds of “Yatagarasu”. Badd took Byrne’s death harder than the death of the witness he was supposed to protect during KG-8 and vowed to hunt down Calisto Yew both for betraying the two of them and getting vengeance for Byrne’s death.
Byrne’s daughter, Kay once commented that Edgeworth and Gumshoe reminded her of Byrne and Badd’s relationship and how effective they were as a team.
Dick Gumshoe: Not necessarily a true friend, more like the general “comrades-in-arms” relationship between fellow officers. But even that was in danger when a newly promoted Gumshoe was the prime suspect in Byrne’s murder until Edgeworth proved otherwise. Shortly before Badd left, he did tell Gumshoe not to lose his “detective spirit”.
Enemies:
Calisto Yew: The third member of “Yatagarasu” who in reality was just a mole working for Quercus Alba’s smuggling syndicate that posed as a grieving sister to the KG-8 witness that was murdered, Cece Yew. With her false identity (and occupation as a defense attorney), she was able to keep an eye on the two men to make sure they didn’t get too close to the syndicate, but eventually they did and Byrne lost his life after a failed attempt from Calisto to discredit him, stabbed by Calisto with the very piece of evidence he stole from the Cohdopian Embassy.
Soon after, Badd found out who killed his friend and proceeded to hunt Calisto down for revenge along with digging into her past to find out who she really was. But it wasn’t until 7 years later when Badd found her again, this time posing as an Interpol investigator named Shih-na. Badd was prepared to shoot Calisto, possibly to kill, as she was holding Kay Faraday hostage at gunpoint, but Shi-Long Lang jumped in the way, taking the bullet and arresting her, with Badd turning himself in shortly after.
In the end, Badd despised her manipulation and murder of his friend and is very glad that she is no longer in a position to do any harm ever again….Except that he hears they are in the same prison.
Manfred von Karma: To put it simply, Badd just doesn’t like Manfred, his arrogant attitude to everyone, and his need to pull rank to get his way. While Badd quit the force after the KG-8 II case and never saw Manfred von Karma again, he did take notice of the prosecutor’s arrest and execution, but didn’t feel strongly either way (In other words, he wasn’t dancing for joy, yet he wasn’t crying over the whole situation.)
Quercus Alba and the members of his syndicate: A bit obvious since Alba was the mastermind behind all of the trouble Badd had ran into from 2008 to now. He is relieved that the syndicate is crippled, but he knows that it’s only a matter of time before anyone that didn’t get hauled in will take the reins and bring the smuggling ring back to its former infamy. While Alba is locked up in another country, some of the players in his organization were put in the same prison as Badd.
Other:
Miles Edgeworth: Badd’s first encounter with the prosecutor was when the young man was ready to take over the KG-8 II case and Badd was cooperative in giving Edgeworth the details of the case…somewhat. Badd also never stopped addressing Edgeworth as “boy” or similar words and thought as him only as essentially “Manfred Jr” until he was proven wrong when Edgeworth came to the defense of Dick Gumshoe who was suspected of murder. 7 years later, Badd met Edgeworth again twice, the first time was in Edgeworth’s own office where he stole evidence locked away in the safe at gunpoint. The second time was hours later where Badd’s quarry, Calisto was taken into custody. The next day, Badd, impressed with Edgeworth’s deductions regarding the case, entrusted him with the evidence he stole from Edgeworth’s office and turned himself into the authorities.
Franziska von Karma: Like Edgeworth, Badd first met Franziska in the courthouse during the KG-8 II affair, though it was not a particularly pleasant meeting as the young girl made a crack about how Badd couldn’t protect his friend that day, causing the normally cool-headed detective to become angry. They wouldn’t see each other again for 7 years, during the murder of Manny Coachen, and neither had the time or will to engage in small talk. But now, Badd does wonder if the daughter of Manfred von Karma is anything like her father, either in personality or tactics as a prosecutor.
One thing to note that during the KG-8 II case, Badd could evade Franziska’s riding crop strikes. Though it is unknown if he could still do that nowadays. His nickname for her was “Little miss”.
Shi-Long Lang: Badd only met the Interpol detective once, when Lang took a bullet intended for his secretary Shih-na that was fired by Badd. Not the best way to establish any kind of relationship but Badd at least respected the idea that Lang is responsible for all of his subordinates.
Character
General Personality: Badd’s personality is one that has been hardened after years of detective work and being shot at many, many times (one lesson he learned is not go around waving your badge at everyone in broad daylight.) He gets to the matter at hand when he needs to speak and while he doesn’t take any nonsense from anyone (even Edgeworth back during his rookie days); he also rarely loses his cool. However, he has a softer side towards children, though it could be argued that he could be a bit condescending to them. But if they start giving him lip, he's not afraid to snap at them with a nickname like "kid" or "boy" or insult them. Additionally, he likes sweets and is always seeing with a sucker in his mouth. When he has the sucker in his mouth, he tends to take time with his words (a.k.a. he uses those damn ellipses in his manner of speech) but when he takes the sucker out, he will be more talkative (it usually happens when the topic at hand is something he is an expert in, like with the Yatagarusu.) He also has a way with words that makes people wonder if he’s joking or being dead serious from time to time.
One habit he does have is to constantly look into a mirror he carries around with him. While it may seem that he is checking himself out all the time, he is really using it to see if anyone is about to surprise him from behind. This will be the most useful thing anyone ever brought or smuggled into a prison ever, especially since Badd is an ex-cop.
He will also address people drastically younger than him using just about every single definition of “young people” ever created (kid, son, boy, child, little miss, etc.)
Appearance: Badd is a tall man, with quite a bit of muscle to him, most of it he retained as he hit his senior years. The hair he has left has grayed out, but his facial hair (a mustache and a variation of a “soul patch” from the bottom of his lip to his chin along with stubble on his cheeks) along with his sideburns remains as black as ever.
Even after Badd stopped being a member of the force, he still dresses in the same attire, opting for a black short sleeved shirt with a white tie tied loosely under the collar of the shirt and his grey trench coat draped over his shoulders and the suspenders for his black pants, almost like it was a cape.
However, the eye-catching part of his clothes is that his trench coat is covered in bullet holes (his tie also has two small dots near the bottom of it.) About half of the holes were from the KG-8 case (with another one created when he chased after Calisto in case 4.) Badd also carries with him a small mirror and several suckers for when he finishes the current one in his mouth. He used to carry a pistol with him, but as he’s retired and in jail, he doesn’t have it with him.
Background:
Tyrell Badd was like any other hardboiled veteran homicide detective (solving cases with his partner, Prosecutor Faraday, getting shot at, consuming candy, etc) until the KG-8 case 10 years ago. If that case was proceeded, Byrne and Badd would have been able to take down a rather large crime syndicate spanning across nations (the very same one headed by Quercus Alba, but they had no idea back then.) But that was not to be as the key witness in the case; Cece Yew was killed by a member of the syndicate, Manny Coachen, before she could take the stand. Badd was in charge of keeping her safe, blaming himself for letting it happen and earning the hatred of Calisto, Cece’s sister, didn’t help that.
After KG-8 fell apart, Byrne and Badd realized that in order to deliver any kind of justice to people like the ones behind Alba’s syndicate, people who can get off scot-free by breaking the law (bribing/murdering witnesses to crimes for example), you need to go beyond the law yourself and bend some rules. Together with Calisto, they formed the three man team called “Yatagarasu” with the goal of stealing evidence that incriminates the corrupt and exposes it on the media. Calisto would get the information out of any possible target, thanks to her job as a defense attorney, Byrne would perform the actual thefts using his knowledge of crime scenes and criminals (as well as “Little Thief”, a device that re-creates crimes that was later passed down to Byrne’s daughter, Kay) and Badd’s job was to use his pull as a detective to erase any evidence of Yatagarasu that would lead back to them. This part was easy to do as Badd and Byrne were both assigned to handle the Yatagarasu case. The team worked well and everyone else was none the wiser, thinking that Yatagarasu was just one man.
Until 3 years later, when Byrne stole a key to a safe that contained vast amounts of incriminating evidence towards Alba’s syndicate AND an employee at the Cohdopian Embassy was about to come forward to testify about various illegal activities related to the syndicate going on at the Embassy. Badd was assigned to guard this employee, Deid Mann and in an event that came out of nowhere, Deid Mann was killed. The killer, Mack Rell was caught on camera and was put on trial two days later only to be killed along with Byrne by Calisto who was working for Alba’s syndicate from the very beginning as well as the one who hired Mack to kill Deid Mann. The original plan was to have Mack discredit Byrne as being Yatagarasu until Byrne offered the criminal a better deal than the one Calisto was offering, which gave Calisto no choice but to kill both of them right in the courthouse to save her, Alba and the rest of the organization.
Badd thought that Dick Gumshoe, then a new detective, was the killer until Miles Edgeworth saved Gumshoe’s sorry behind for the first time ever and proved that it was Calisto that was the murderer. Calisto fled the courthouse after that and Badd started to dig into her life. As it turns out, Calisto Yew was a fake name she used, as Cece never had a sister. Realizing that he was duped, Badd spent the next seven years of his life chasing after Calisto, planning on getting revenge for the slain Byrne. He finally achieved this with the help of Edgeworth, Gumshoe, and their allies when it was revealed that Shi-Long Lang’s secretary, Shiina, was Calisto in disguise, though Lang was the one to bring her in (after Badd shot Lang in the leg, who jumped in the way of the bullet to apprehend Shih-na.) After that, Badd let the legend of Yatagarasu come to a close after giving Edgeworth evidence related to KG-8 that he stole earlier from Edgeworth’s office at gunpoint. The young prosecutor eventually was able to discover the mastermind behind the syndicate, Quercus Alba and put numerous people including Alba behind bars. But Badd never saw that happen as he turned himself in after giving Edgeworth what he stole because after all, he was a part of Yatagarasu and broke the law to do what he believed was right.
