Due to circumstances, I have in the last couple of weeks, purged myself of hundreds of books.
All my friends and acquaintances have been quite enthusiastic about the shedding, but only one offered her condolences on the "inevitable grief".
The grief itself was quite plain. There were many books that I would have liked to have kept but could not. 15 huge garbage bags went to the local hospital, library and St Vincents. I did keep 3 bags of books that I could not part from at the time but even they will have to be culled and it's not something I can bear to contemplate at the moment.
Those books were in my mind, like good friends. They took me away to far places and different lives. They allowed me peace in solitude. They told big and little stories. Histories, Biographies and Fantasies. Science Fiction and Modern Journalism. Comedy and Drama.
Shakespeare wrote "What's gone, and what's past help, Should be past grief" but not just yet.
