Chapter 23
“Truth”

.:.EARLY DECEMBER.:.
:::...Japan...:::

L sat at his desk, looking over the files he had gathered pertaining to Kaori's case; it was surprising how little evidence there was. The door lock had been broken, so there was a possibility that it could have been forced entry. However the way it had been broken indicated that it was done from the inside: a cover-up. The blood in the house was identified as the parents, but there was a second source that was unknown, and also a knife found hidden under a floorboard. He still hadn't gotten the results back from the lab yet, and in the meantime he was looking over everything else at the scene.

“Watari,” he said a moment later. “I want to back to the crime scene again; there might have been something we missed.”

“Sir, we covered the entire area,” Watari replied.

“I know, but I want to look again.”

“Very well.”

They drove out to the house and stepped inside. The blood was still dried to the walls and floors, and nothing had been changed since the first day he had set foot in here.

“I don't understand what you're looking for,” Watari said.

The truth was, L didn't either; he just wanted to look again, see if there was anything. He didn't want to believe his intuition at this point, but all the evidence pointed to it. If he could only find some proof that it was someone else, anyone else....

The parents' room was at the back of the house, and consisted of a bed, television, and a couple tables. The knife had been found buried under a floorboard near the bed; that very floorboard was still raised up, revealing everything underneath. L looked carefully, but there was nothing else besides what had already been found. He reached as far back as he could, touching nothing. He pulled up several other floorboards, searching beneath them as well, to no avail.

Finally, he found something; next to the closet, when he raised the floorboard he found an array of video taps stuffed under the floor. They weren't labeled, and there were five of them. I wonder if it's possible the murder was recorded on one of these tapes.... He put one in the VCR and rewound it to the beginning, before hitting play.

It wasn't footage of the killing.

I guess the old man wanted some homemade porn with his wife....Sick, but I guess people do this sometimes.

L reached to hit the stop button, but froze when he saw the girl's face.

It wasn't the wife.

My God.... it couldn't be...that he actually.... Feeling sick, he turned off the tape. His own daughter..... I honestly...never thought..... He sighed. I can't deny my suspicions about the murderer now. The only one with a motive, the only one capable.... At first I was suspicious of the fact that she was the only one alive...but I always figured it was luck. But now....

At that moment, Watari's cellphone rang. He picked it up, nodded, and then hung up. “L,” he said. “The results of the fingerprints and blood came in.”

“And...?” L said, prepared for the information.

“The fingerprints came up a match to the daughter,” Watari said quietly. “The blood too.”

L was silent.

“So what now?”

“....I'm going to England,” he replied.
