Despite all the illness last year, I managed to get out and about to a few gigs, and I've been a lucky lucky man.
I go out to see the headlining bands, and I hope to see a decent support. 2006 was a very good year for new musical discoveries.
Join the Noir as he takes you on a trip through 2006's best bits, with links to videos and MySpace so you can check out their music for yourselves. Tell me, am I deluded or am I right.
If there's any justice in the world, all of these people will be HUGE next year
Bex Marshall Supporting Dar Williams at the Borderline, London
I'm totally in love with Bex Marshall. She's an acoustic rock / blues / country sort of lass who is one hell of a guitarist. Imagine Stevie Ray Vaughn meets Bonnie Raitt, and you're almost there. And she has attitude. It's not the attitude of a poser. It's the attitude of someone who has played the pubs and clubs and dealt with the heckles.
Bex on MySpace The Shortwave Set Supporting Goldfrapp at the Guildhall, Southampton
It's so very hard to descibe The Shortwave Set. Victorian Funk? Electronic Folk? It doesn't matter. They can't be pigeonholed except into the category of good music. And the new stuff is sounding great :)
The Shortwave Set on MySpace Jack Savoretti Supporting Shawn Colvin at the Union Chapel, London
Seeing Jack support Shawn Colvin just completely blew me away. I haven't been as moved by a male singer since Jeff Buckley. He is THAT good. I can't really think of much else to say about him. Words just seem to do little justice.
Jack Savoretti on MySpace Sohodolls I must admit I haven't actually seen the Sohodolls yet. I've only discovered them in the last couple of months whilst I've been too ill to travel. Imagine Blondie meets Kraftwerk. Or imagine Scritti Politti meets Ladytron meets All About Eve.
Well, just check out their stuff :D
sohodolls on MySpace Now if I could get any bands from MySpace together for a gig, this would be it. :D
