For all of you who are EXTREMELY BORED:
Concert 1: Coheed and Cambria (March 29th, 2004)
This amazing show took place in Providence, RI at a local venue called The Lupos Strand. The venue resembled an old concert or theater hall that had been renovated for concerts. I recognized this because the stage had two big columns, one on either side of the stage, which resembled an old theater stage. Also when you would look in back area of the stage you could see all sorts sand bags, stage equipment, and a velvet curtain that had been open during the entire show. The other element that made this venue look like an old theater house was that it also had a full balcony, even though the balcony was off limits it looked as if it had a perfect view of the stage. Add a couple of bars, a few tables, some new lighting, and a killer sound system and you have the reinvented rock venue that is there today. Sitting down was not part of this audience’s vocabulary; the only word that could describe audience is total energy. There was lots of dancing but not really what you would consider normal dancing, I’m talking more along the lines of multiple “mosh pits” where fans would make some room in the crowd, making a “pit” and run into each other, through a few punches, swing their legs in the air, and swing each other around. All in good fun, even though sometimes accidents do happen, it is all about feel the music so much that you just want to move around and let out some energy, anger, or just get loose.
Looking at the performer/audience interaction I really don’t think it could have gone any better. This band, Coheed and Cambria, has built a tremendous following in the past two years since the birth of their first record “The Second Stage Turbine Blade” and their sophomore release “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3”, such a following that at times when the singer wanted to get a little crazy with the performance he would not have to worry about singing the lyrics because the crowd was yelling ever word at the top of their lungs. At one point a few fights broke out and the band almost stopped playing to address that they would not take any fight of any sort at their show. The singer, Claudio, made the best of the situation by saying “Jeeze I didn’t know our music was so aggressive, last time I checked I sang like a bitch”. It was a way of poking fun at him self for the high pitch vocal style that he uses and what has become an important in recognizing this band as being new and original. The singers comment eased up the crowd and there were no more fights for the remainder of the show. The crowd expressed how much they enjoyed each song with a tidal wave of yelling, screaming, and clapping after each song.
Coheed and Cambria is a four piece hard rock/emo/sci-fi rock band. That consists of drums, bass, lead guitar, and rhythm guitar/vocals, more or less your basic rock band type of instrumentation. Coheed and Cambria is a live band, they love to perform and many time go into small improvisations in the middle of song to spice things up a bit. They take the stage with a burst of explosive energy many times getting really in to the music by jumping around, head banging, and soloing. The texture of the music is one that is a combination of distorted guitars, creative bass lines, impressive drums, and a high pitch vocal melody that is backed with the dark lyrics that paint the un-fished story that is Coheed and Cambria. I would have to say that the most dynamics and inflection can be found in the singer’s voice. He is able to sing words and phrases that one would think would never fit together but rather flows through them with ease expressing impressive and catchy vocal melodies. The band also uses an array of effects which include some guitar delay, chorus, and a talk box used in a few of the band’s songs for playing a solo on top of lead guitar line.
As far as sound quality, from a psycho-acoustical point of view, I think that the venue was just built in a way that compliments this sound nicely. This doesn’t go with out saying that the venue also had a sate of the art sound board with a combination of top quality stage monitor’s and out put speaker system, where the engineer could really tweak the sound and make the band sound as good as possible. In talking about the talent of the performers I think they are some of the most talented and creative music artists out there today because of their extremely intricate rhythm and guitar lines combined with the vocal style and catchiness of the lyrics. They are defiantly not blowing up because they look good with their shirts off; these are a group of guys that know what they are doing. In my opinion I think this was one of the best shows I’ve seen all year. On a personal note, I entered this show feeling really stressed out from the pressures of school and the basic everyday struggles of life but as soon as Coheed and Cambria took the stage I felt healed and rejuvenated. Whatever had happened before the show wasn’t important anymore and it just made me feel good again, it made me want to get back on track with my own musical projects and realize that whatever happened in the past wasn’t the end of the world and I’m still hear to live another day. I think this is the purpose for any type of live show and it is really why we musicians do what we do.
