As mentioned in my earlier post, my iPod has been giving me shit lately. Earlier this week it completely broke down; it decided that there weren't, in fact, any songs on it at all. That's when it decided to load in the first place--most of the time I found myself facing down the dreaded Apple--trying unsuccessfully to boot-up. But then, when I plugged it into my computer--when I plugged it in and the computer recognized it and didn't freeze up, that is--it declared that there were still 18 gigs that were being used up. I concluded that the songs were still there, just inaccessible.
A trip to the Apple store was in order.
So I show up, register for an appointment (who knew you had to register for an appointment? Their Genius Bar is hopping indeed), and wait. I really felt as though I were waiting in a doctor's office--minus the chairs.
Anyway, I finally get my turn, and the guy is like, "there's not much we can do, especially since you're no longer under warranty. Have you tried restoring it [ie. reformatting it]? That usually solves most problems. I told him my computer refused to do anything of the sort--the iPod updater application unfailingly freezes up. He took it back to try to reformat it for me (meanwhile I was reconciling myself to the loss of 18 gigs OF MY LIFE). But eventually he came back:
"Sorry, we couldn't do anything either." He said that they might be able to restore it, but doing so would cost about as much as buying a new iPod. Then he told me about the iPod recycling program, and how I could get a discount on a new iPod--in addition to my student discount.
I was floored. I don't know if this is some new sales technique--make you fret for an hour, promise to try their best as they make you wait some more, then tell you it's hopeless and finally offer to sell you a new iPod--but it worked. I was like "sure, what the hell." They offered me the choice of white or black, and although I would've liked a black one, I'd recently purchased some nice new headphones--white--and of COURSE they had to match...
While she was ringing me up I was screaming internally "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?? $250????" I tried to tell myself that I should've gone with an iPod shuffle or an iPod nano, or at the very least gone home and thought it over... But the truth is that I need all my music with me--I've grown accustomed to it, something akin to a security blanket. And I need to listen to music ALL THE TIME. This week has made me surly and loathe to leave the house, to leave my music.
So I have a brand new 30 gig iPod, and -$250. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE HELL THIS DOES TO MY MONTHLY BUDGET??? Which, as things are, is already strained enough what with plane tickets to Chicago for my JET interview...
Ugh, I don't even want to look at my finances for a week.
PS Yeah I know this all seems silly...I just need a bit of time to process it all. Yeesh...
