A Conveniently Located Popular Chain Restaurant, Halfway Between Fandom and New York
Fred had shirked off work that fine Saturday, and went and got in his truck to drive up to the meeting he'd arranged. Hell, if anything, he'd get a free meal out of it. And if the offer was really good, well, there was always the possibility he could accept it. Didn't have much ties in Fandom lately, anyway. Even if it did feel like home.
And that's how Fred Dukes, he who would be known as 'The Blob', first met Charles Xavier, often known as Professor X. The location was of Fred's choosing, of course. Not that Fred knew it, but Charles was not particularly fond of the atmosphere in your average Hooters restaurant. But Fred did notice the guy actually looked the waitress in the eye and was particularly weirded out when Charles tipped generously not because he was trying to pick her up, but with a comment about treating her son to ice cream.
Fred was pretty sure Candi hadn't mentioned a son at any point when she was serving their food.
But that was all explained when, on the way out, Charles finally explained what was so special about the school.
A school of mutants. Possibly even some Fred had helped round up for Stryker, Charles told him. But he still wanted Fred to come teach. He wanted Fred there.
He accepted the job on the spot.
