Bible

So finally here's the promised post about the Bible. This thing is four pages long single spaced at size 10 font in Word so I'm probably eating up everyone's friends pages again but I haven't figured out the LJ cut and since I'm at work I don't really have time to research it. So we're just gonna have to copy it in here. Take care all and hope ( Read more... )

Unfortunately, unless you agree with what the Bible says, none of that proves that it is the word of God, or that the majority of the miraculous things are even true.

Besides that, just for the sake of argument, I personally could not bear to worship a "terrifying" God, or one who loved me so much that he created me so flawed as to judge me as a sinning disappointment. You point me to a God that has risen above our notions of anger, jealousy, and condescension, and I'm there. But, as it stands, I just would be sad to live in a world governed by such a wrathful God. And I daresay that even if I found it all were true, I just might sin anyway. I won't be a good person out of fear, I'll be a good person for the sake of it. And I won't be bullied by any higher power. In essence, I'd rather reign in Hell than serve in Heaven.

Sorry to be the only one to rebut, Matt, and I truly hope none of this offended you, but you know me... if you put it out there, I'm probably gonna argue it.

You say that you don't want to be bullied by God. Thank God that He doesn't do that. You say that you want God to move beyond our notions of justice. Can't you see that He's so far beyond us that we can't even truly comprehend it? It's like trying to pour a 10 gallon tank of understanding into our tablespoon of wisdom. His justice is utterly perfect. It's so perfect that He SENT His only Son to die and bear the punishment for our sins, just so that justice could be satisfy and He could reveal His grace. You mentioned anger, jealousy, and condescension...what about forgivenss? How wonderful is it that Christ doesn't forgive the way that we forgive, with a long list of conditions? We forgive saying "Just don't do it again" or "Don't ever hurt me again" or even "But I'll bring this up again and again to make you feel guilty." Christ totally and perfectly forgives our sins. Blessed is the man who's sin the Lord does not recall, who's transgressions are forgiven!!! And all we have to do to receive that is lay down our pride. ( ... )
