Ah i'm pleased you like it!
In the case of the luminosity layer, it's not 100% needed, will depend. But you could use hue/sat and a screen layer to help there!
I never sure what other programes have, i should be less ignorant and learn about them really! :]

For the luminosity layer in GIMP I used lighten only and it worked pretty well.
