IBARW: the WoC are awesome edition.

So, it's the International Blogging Against Racism Week.

And I should have thinky thoughts and wise words, but I really don't, so instead I'm going to post a list of the most awesome Women of Color from tv, movies, and books.

Leading ladies and background characters, of the newest summer blockbusters and old favourite tv shows. In no particular order (or rather, the order I uploaded the pics to photobucket ;)).

1. Martha Jones (Doctor Who)

She's my favourite Nu!Who companion; smart, capable, kickass, doesn't buy your bullshit, and, most of all, she knows her worth, knows what's good for her, knows when to leave. And, single-handedly saves the world. More than once.

2. Lane Kim (Gilmore Girls)

So maybe the show was all about the Loreleis, but my favourites were always the kooky residents of Stars Hollow, and gods, did I love Lane. Everything about her was cute and cool, her hiding places under the floor, her encyclopedic knowledge of music, that one time she dyed her hair for about an hour...

3. Zoe Washburne (Firefly)

Pretty much every single character played by Gina is a definition of awesome (I first saw her as Ana Espinoza in Alias and loved, loved, LOVED her), but Zoe is my favourite. Loving and caring, and fierce and awesome, a soldier and a wife, she's what she wants to be, nothing more, nothing less. And every time she calls Mal Reyndols on his bullshit? Priceless.

4. Toshiko Sato (Torchwood)

I have an amazing thing for girl nerds, especially if they wear glasses and labcoats, and Toshiko is my Torchwood crush. She's smarter than anyone else and she knows it, she has insecurities and she deals with them, she has a gentle sense of humour that I adore.

5. Camille Saroyan (Bones)

A pathologist with a dark sense of humour. I love how she treats everything around her with a dry sense of humour and indulgence; she works with some very strange people and she handles it wonderfully. Her interractions with the interns are absolutely wonderful, I adore her relationship with Booth, the fondness of an ended relationship, and I love how she interracts with Brennan and Angela; this show has some of the best female friendships on TV right now.

6. Monica Dawson (Heroes)

I miss Monica on Heroes. She not only had a really awesome power (which, after Charlie's power, is the one I most want), she also dealt with it in a way I loved. By the time the second season came around I was bored with most of the approaches to the abilities (especially Claire's, FYI), and the way Monica reacted was endearing and real and awesome.

7. Renee Montoya (Batman)

Of all the Batverse characters, she's my third favourite one (after James Gordon and Babs Gordon). She's one of the very few gay comics characters, she's tough and strong and smart and kickass, she has issues and struggles, she becomes a superhero the Question, she's generally just awesomely fantastic. And I love, love writing her in fics.

8. Nyota Uhura (Star Trek)

Regardless whether it's TOS or Reboot, some things don't change, and one of them is the awesomeness of Uhura. She can treaten you with a dagger, and she can hear you breathing, she's simply a force to be reckoned with, while she's also smart and kind and sympathetic, and no, she doesn't buy your bullshit either. There's a reason why she's the one whose respect Kirk has won by the end of the new movie, you know.

9. Ziva David (NCIS)

You don't even want to know how many ways of killing you this woman knows. And I absolutely adore her constant messing up of English idioms although I suppose that by now, she only does that to mess with Tony.

10. Original Cindy (Dark Angel)

I remember watching Dark Angel for the first time, I couldn't understand half of what Cindy was saying with my poor English, but I knew that I loved her. Dark Angel was full of fun characters, but she was especially awesome, not a transgenic or a guerilla journalist with a messiah complex, but fun and kickass and fantastic nonetheless.

11. Teyla (Stargate Atlantis)

I still hate SGA for a lot of things they've done to my favourite characters and the universe, but I still adore Teyla; the voice of reason, who still could kick John's ass with a couple of sticks, and then be calm and serene and more awesome than anyone in two galaxies.

12. Sharon Valeri (Battlestar Galactica)

Boomer was one of the first characters I loved on the show, and Athena remained one of the very few I actually still loved by the end. Number 8 Cylon model had one of the most compelling and interesting storylines on the show, and Sharon/Boomer/Athena was just simply awesome (even if I didn't always like *all* the models ;))

13. Guinevere (Merlin)

I have to admit, I was mighty puzzled by the casting when I first saw spoiler pictures, but damnit, it works, and this Guinevere is one of the very few I like, and believe me, I've read and seen a great many number of Guineveres (I'm writing my MA thesis on Arthurian legends; great many number, I tell ya). She's sweet and nice and funny and smart and sometimes awkward and just perfect.

14. Ria Torres (Lie to Me)

She knows when you lie. She really does. And she's not afraid to call anyone's bullshit, and she really dislikes people who mess with her, and she's an incredibly fast learner and is generally unbelievably brilliant.

15. Astrid Farnsworth (Fringe)

Fringe is my new favourite show, mostly because of Walter Bishop and the freakshow that is his lab, and Astrid takes all of this in stride, and can do anything without blinking an eye, and she's a linguistic major. And awesome.
