Clearing in the Preserve - Monday Afternoon

Mar 08, 2010 21:08

George didn't have anything on Monday's except the usual and usually handwavy knife-fighting lesson with Kyle and sometimes Luke's with Kyle and Bobby.

Which usually he was good with except that this weekend left him with way too much to think about - especially in relationship to Kyle whose name seemed far more familiar to him now.  It was a bit ( Read more... )

"I'm late," Kyle said when he finally arrived. "Sorry."

"Tisn' a problem," George said, raising his hand to greet Kyle. "How d'ye be?"

Kyle shrugged. "I thought I was a Russian astronaut all weekend. You?"

"Just some lad wit' a fixation on computers," he said, a little shrug. He'd been John Connor long enough to know he wasn't ever, ever going to mention the name to Kyle Reese. "Twas stupid, an' I hope never happens again."

"Computers only bring trouble," Kyle said. "I'm glad you're back to being you. Did you have a different accent?"

"Talked like an American," George said, playing in the accent for a moment. He grinned over at Kyle. "Glad you're you too. How do Russians talk?"

"He kind of talked like this," Kyle said, trying awkwardly to sound like Chekov had. "And he couldn't say the letter V. I don't know if all Russians sound like that. He was from the future or something. A different future to me, anyway."

"None of them robots?" George asked curiously.

"No Skynet," he confirmed. "No terminators. His head was full of technical stuff, so they had a lot of really advanced technology, but it didn't turn on them." Kyle looked confused. "I don't understand him. He loved it - the technology. He loved working with it."

"Tis possible then," he pointed out. "Like Jaina an' Tahiri's world? Wonder what does make it different."

John Connor.

"Wish I knew. Or maybe it will happen there eventually. Billy, one of the guys in the resistance used to say it was inevitable. That it would have happened no matter what."

George wondered for a moment, but it wasn't anything he could do about it. Maybe th'lad would be able to.

"Tha' can' be true though," he pointed out. "Or yer Russian's computers would've. An' Jaina's an' all that."

Kyle nodded. "We must have done something wrong." Not that Kyle had been old enough to read, let alone somehow contribute to the development of artificial intelligence, but he was a human survivor and in his mind that meant he was just as responsible for what had happened as the programmers. "Maybe someone will figure it out some day and change it."

"Tis hardly somethin' ye can be sayin' we about," George argued instantly. "Twasn' yer fault even a li'l bit." He shrugged a little. "I dunno. Tis an odd thing."

Kyle stayed silent about George's protest. "Odd is a pretty good way of putting it. You get into any trouble without me?"

"P'raps a bit," George agreed. "Emma did need a bit of assistance, an' I was able t'provide. All did end well." He paused. "Prob'ly best not t'be tellin' Bobby. He does get possessive about them from his world. Speakin' of, you seen him?"
