Room 224 - Saturday Evening

Aug 22, 2009 20:55

George was supposed to have had a date with Jean today, but it had been canceled due to evil computer reasons which probably made Bobby very, very happy.

So instead he was being very social as he hung out in his room playing dice with himself.

At least the door was open?

After the mess of yesterday, Kyle had been intending on finding Layla Miller, planning on asking her a more specific question about the letter in his hand. Instead, he found George.

"Hey George. Layla Miller in?"

George grinned up at him then looked around. "I dunno. Ye can come in an' look if ye want."

Kyle came in, took a glance and raised an eyebrow at George. "Guess not." He took a seat, letter still in hand. "How'd your date go?"

"Had t'be postponed," George said with a shrug. He didn't care. Really. "How'd th' workin' go? Did th' Squishy machine behave?"

"It was okay. I remember to go on the right day this week. I messed that up last week. The Squishy machine was pretty good. I think it could tell I was too tired to argue with it. I was trying to do something Layla Miller told me to do and ended up sleeping in a cave trying to dodge some birds who kept swooping at me."

"An' that would be yer first mistake," he teased, not even meaning it. "Layla got ye trapped in a cave, eh? What'd ye do to her?"

"Whatever it is, I haven't figured it out yet. She knows stuff, so I asked her if she knew anything that could help me. So she told me to throw this rock into the duck pond and it didn't go so well. I should have been more specific," he decided. "All I wanted to know was who to trust with this letter I got." And lo, by telling George, he gave himself his own answer.

"Th' lass has an odd sense of humour," George sympathized. "She probably was meanin' t'get ye somewhere in th' most roundabout way possible." He grinned. "Or tha's what I'd do did I 'know stuff.' Is it a letter from home?"

"I think so. I'm pretty sure. The signature looks like Connor's, so I think it's from him." He fiddled with the letter with his hands. "I can't read much. Connor doesn't know."

"Ye can't-" George was from the slums but from the slums of a country that required primary education for all of its subjects, and the idea of not being able to read almost seemed like heresy. Not that he let any of that show, not wanting to embarrass Kyle at it. "I can. If ye'd like a hand."

Kyle looked at George for a good few seconds, then offered the letter to him. "I don't know what it's in it, but it could be something no one else is supposed to know. You can't tell anyone about what it says. Anyone." His tone was serious, but not accusatory. He wouldn't have been holding out the letter if he didn't trust that George would keep his secret.

George nodded, reaching out for the letter. "I swear it on th' Trickster," he said. "None will be hearin' a word of it from me."

Swearing on the Trickster was a wary business but he figured Kyle deserved the strongest oath he had.

He didn't know who the Trickster was, but George swearing on something was enough for him. "Go ahead and open it."

Unthinkingly he pulled a knife to slit open the envelope, being careful of Kyle's letter. Once it was open, he pulled the letter out, scanning it carefully to try to adjust to the different style handwriting.

He began to read, for once speaking completely properly. "It's from your John Connor," George confirmed. "He writes that you're to stay here at Fandom and take classes and learn useful things. Star's being taken care of Kate and she sends her greetings." He continued in this vein for a while, reading the entire long letter.

Kyle listened to every word, soaking it in and committing it to memory. Star was good. That was the first thing that made him relax the part of him that had been worried about her ever since he came here. He listened as George relayed the news that he could, in fact, get home via something called Portalocity, but that any trips back to Fandom would require the Time Displacement Equipment. He now had permission to leave the island, though he wasn't to go to Los Angeles under any circumstances, and to keep alert for any Skynet activity off-island. There was also information on how to keep in contact, and an order for monthly reports.

When the letter was done, Kyle sat quietly for a few moments, letting the new information settle in his mind. Then he looked back up at George. "What happened to your voice?"

"Me mam would murder me if I read yer letter wit'out givin' it th' proper respect," George said with a shrug. "So you'll be stayin' then, aye?"
