CHAPTER 1: A Tale Doesn’t Always Start with ‘Once Upon a Time’
My older sister started my day by pulling my bed sheets off on my comfy bed which caused me to fell over the floor. Fortunately, I put mat on my flooring so I didn’t feel the cold ground but unfortunately I hit my head on it resulting for me to wake up. “Nee-chan!!”. I groaned, rubbing my head. “What’s the matter with you? It’s only 7 in the morning!”, I complained after seeing the time on my alarm clock.
“Finally, you’re awake!”, she said, then crouched to reached my head and ruffled my hair. “And you asked what the matter is? Oh common my dear brother, don’t tell me you forgot that today is the first day of class.” she informed me.
“Ehhhhhhhhhhhh?!”
Seriously, I didn’t really think that I would forget this day. It’s not that I don’t like school. You’re wrong, and soon you will know the reason why … or maybe not. By the way, my name is Yuri. Chinen Yuri. I am a 2nd year university student at Heisei University. I may not be as tall as normal university students, but believe me I’m already in college.
I sighed as I reached the campus. I’m still lucky that I was not late for the first day of class. I checked my name in the bulletin board to see my class section. I already knew my section though, I just want to recheck and confirm it… Okay fine, I admit, I just want … to know who are going to be my classmates for this year. If … If… If we’d be on the same class again. A smile was automatically formed on my beautiful face when I spotted his name. “Yosh~” I whispered.
My feet stepped inside our assigned room just in time. It was like I stepped on the school’s bell. “Ohayou~” I greeted. It’s better to be nice on the first day isn’t it? So that everyone in the class would have a good impression on you. My old classmates probably knew me, but I’m not sure with the new faces I’d seen in the class. I’m nice to everyone, well, except to that annoying guy who greeted me back after I did. “Good morning shorty.” he said. I just rolled my eyes on him and sat on the seat beside my best friend, Ryutaro. “Ohayou, Chii. I thought you’d arrive earlier than me like usual.”
“Ohayou Ryuutan. I thought so too. But I kinda enjoyed the vacation that I almost forgot it ended yesterday.” I chuckled.
“That is SO not you, Chii.”, he said, giving a stress on the third word.
“Yeah yeah. I know. I know.”
Our homeroom teacher entered the room so we did our traditional kiritsu-rei-chakuseki thingy. I wasn’t paying attention on our sensei because she was just orientating us. First day of school is always like this right? I don’t know why do they need to set a different day for the orientations if they would gonna repeat it on the first day of the class? If they are just concern for those who didn’t attend then it’s not our problem anymore. Then orient them somewhere else. I’m not complaining, I’m just saying my opinion. Perhaps, I like it when it happens because I can roam my eyes everywhere inside the class. And while sensei is busy on her never-ending rules and regulations, I would take this opportunity to introduce some of my classmates.
So let’s start with my best friend since he’s sitting beside me and he’s busy playing games with his DS hidden on his bag.
Name: Morimoto Ryutaro
Age: 18 (yes, he’s a BIT young for this level)
Locker number: (uhmm do I need to say this?) 215 (next to mine which is 214)
Good at: Baseball and video games
Bad at : Janken (*^-^)b
Bestfriend: Chinen Yuri (meeee)
Sibling/s: a younger brother and sister
Pet: Chii (eh? me?) - a goldfish
Okay. So I think it’s plenty enough. Ryuutan has been my bestfriend since middle school so we really know each other that much. He’s a bit spoiled (maybe because he’s younger but I’m more spoiled! ) but he acts more mature than me. So sometimes, I am the one who is depending on him though it should be the other way around because I’m older. But I can’t help it when someone wants to spoil me, so I just let them be. Apparently, he joined the School Baseball Team during our first year and he’s one of the team captains now. He’s good at sports, just not in janken (is that even a sport? whatever.) Uhm.. what else could I say. Some students say that he looks like a serious type, but he’s actually not. Ryuutan looks serious in front of others, simply because he’s shy. But overall, he is a nice person who you can depend on (and if you’re pretty close, you can also depend on him when you have a money problem, he’s super duper rich! Yet, he isn't the richest student in our university). Lastly, he is ranked as the 5th Coolest Guy, 2nd Richest Guy, and 4th Cutest Guy in our school.
Yes, we have this kind of School Ranking every term. Oh, by the way our university is separated into buildings. The East building is only for the boys students while the West building is only for the girls students. Girls and boys are strictly prohibited on each building, so even if we go on the same school with the girls, it feels like we attend on different schools. We only see each other during the flag ceremony, SC elections, Bunkasai and Foundation Day. According to them, these kinds of rules are applied to prevent PDA (Public Display of Affection), teen pregnancy, courting during class hours, etc. So basically, we got our ranking thru girls’ votes while they are ranked according to our votes. You really need to be popular in this university to achieve a high rank. By the way, I rank as the 7th Coolest Guy, 3rd Handsomest Guy. That’s not all, for 2 years, I rank first both in the Cutest and Prettiest Guy category.
“Chii, stop staring at me, I can’t concentrate on my game.” Ryuutan whispered. I was not aware that I was staring at him for the whole time. I’m sure he felt conscious with my stare while he’s playing.
“I’m sorry Ryuu. I wasn’t really staring. I was just thinking of something.” I explained, clapping my hands to apologize. I looked at the other direction so that he could peacefully go back with his game.
I looked on his seat - at my secret crush. He’s writing something on his notebook. I’m not sure if he’s jotting down what our teacher was saying or he’s only doing some doodles, or maybe, maybe, maybe his writing a love letter for me!! AKDGSFGSGKSSAKGKF! IN YOUR DREAMS CHINEN YURI, IN YOUR DREAMS.
I had been smiling like an idiot while my eyes were busy looking at him; my heart had been running a race while I think of him. Calm down, I’m gonna spill out who my crush is.
He is … Arioka Daiki !!!! My cute prince charming since last year. Like Ryuutan, we’ve been classmates since middle school but I didn’t yet have a crush on him at that time. It only started during our freshmen when I got injured during our PE class (we’re doing track and field), he was the one who carried me and took me to the infirmary. He is so super duper super duper nice! He is the Mr. Nice Guy in the whole university or maybe on my whole world. I was used on calling him ‘Dai-chan’ since we knew each other for a long time. We are friends, but not to the extent of what Ryuu and I are. He is in a Cooking Club, and also a member of Soccer Club. And these are his University Ranking : 4th Coolest Guy, 2nd Cutest Guy, and 1st Nicest Guy. He is good both in sports and academics.
My eyes were about to form hearts when his evil bestfriend suddenly blocked his annoying face on the beautiful view I was seeing. “Why aren’t you blinking shorty?” he titled his head and smirked as if mocking.
“It’s none of your business, fatty!”, I retorted as I pushed away his face. “And will you please change seat with somebody else? I don’t want you to be my seatmate. Pft”
“I don’t want it either!”
“Chinen-kun, Yamada-kun!” sensei called us. “It’s only the first day of school yet you two have started fighting again?” sensei crossed her arms, raising her brows.
“Gomen sensei.” we both apologized. After that, sensei finished the 2nd round of her orientation and started writing our lesson on the white board, while that annoying pig looked at me to show a peace-sign but after that, he stuck his tongue out. GRRRRRR THAT PIG!
I never thought that PIGS eventually do have names, and they could even go to school. My piggy classmate is no other than, Yamada Ryosuke. He is really annoying! He always teases me, ever since middle school. I don’t know how did he become Dai-chan’s best friend, their personalities are really in opposite. Dai-chan is nice, while Yamada isn’t. The things that they have in common are that they both can cook and they’re good in soccer. Yamada doesn’t even excel in Math, in Science, in History, in Geography, to sum it up; he’s SO SO SO SO BADDDDDDD when it comes to academics. He’s even a STRAWBERRY FREAK. Seriously, I don’t know why girls see him as a cool person, when he is not. HE DOESN’T DESERVE THE TITLE OF BEING THE MOST HANDSOME GUY INSIDE THE CAMPUS. LIKE WHAT THE FUDGE? ARE YOU SERIOUS? ARE THE GIRLS ON THE WEST BUILDING ALL BLIND? IT’S SO OBVIOUS THAT DAI-CHAN IS MORE HANDSOME THAN HIM, A FATTY-COWARD STUPID GLUTTON PERVERT PIG. SO GRRRRRRR!!!
“Chii. are you okay?” I suddenly received a poke from Ryuu. “I can see smoke coming out from your ears and nose.”
“Ehh?? Maji de?!”
He laughed softly, “Of course, it was just a joke. You look so pissed today. Just ignore Yamada and calm down okay.”, he advised and smiled.
“Okay, I’ll try. Thanks Ryuu.” I smiled back.
“No prob.”
**
Just some few minutes before our morning class end. Our teacher announced that we would have a new sitting arrangement by means of a draw. He pulled the mini-drawer on her table and got a box which has small balls with numbers written on it. We stood one by one and picked a ball inside the box. Each class has maximum students of 25 so the chairs are arranged by five by five. Being so excited, Ryuu volunteered to pick first. He got seat number 12 which is located on the 4th row of the third column. I was the next one and fortunately I got seat number 13, so we’re seatmates again.
“Yosh!!” we clapped our hands when we knew we’re sitting beside each other again. “Chii is sitting on the center ne~ it’s like you’d be the center of attraction” he teased, while I suddenly had a goosebump, “I don’t know Ryuu. I never considered 13 as lucky.”
The draw continues until there were 2 seats left. One on my other side, which is seat number 14 and the other one was on the 1st row of the 4th seat column, seat number 20. I don’t really care who would be my new seatmate aside from Ryuu, it’s just I feel so nervous seeing the 2 person who haven’t yet picked a number. They were … Dai-chan and … someone who is too grossed to mention.
I started praying for my life for this whole semester. I always want Daichan to be my soulmate, err… seatmate I mean. So I prayed to all the Gods I know to grant my wish and prayer. Not until …
“Oh my god. I’m going to sit next to that chibi?!”
