The Saturday poem: Anon ( but inspired by Eglantine's recent pics)

Jun 21, 2014 10:22

Several firsts today on TSP - the launch of number one in a series of new icons - this is due to amaraal who asked last week if I had a logo for TSP.
The icon features one of the muses of poetry in a painting by that sweetly degenerate and so very 18th century artist Francois Boucher and the (new)TSP logo. However I am, as is evident, rubbish at icon making and am appealing to readers of The Saturday poem who are good at such things to donate a icon.
Featuring one of the muses -or inspiring male versions therof :) - or indeed other suitable artwork and the TSP lettering. Free chocolate, sonnet or strawberries to all contributors whichever is more practical

Today is also I think the first TSP column to feature that prolific poet : Anon
and what may turn out to be the shortest entry at this stage. Lately eglantine_br has posted some delightful pictures of her new neighbourhood including swans at the beach - and I have been watching the young cygnets and parents on the Thames near me. As many readers may know, the legend concerning swans ran that they were silent and sang only as they were dying -hence swansong.

The Silver Swan

The silver swan, who living had no note,
When death approach'd, unlock'd her silent throat;
Leaning her breast against the reedy shore,
Thus sung her first and last, and sung no more.
Farewell, all joys; O Death, come close mine eyes;
More geese than swans now live, more fools than wise.

This tiny poem is for all those of us who have felt that we are doing fine - it is of course all the others... It is set to music by Orlando Gibbons and is very beautiful and can be heard here amongst many other places on the web :

PS Many thanks to vespican for last week's very popular column with its duelling cat and dog, and coming soon for the 4th July weekend another contributor from the USA - a first time column from the excellent enkiduts Yay!

PPS for anyone who has read this far, swans are also the source of my best Wagner joke - if you are desperate enough ;)
