The Navyboy and his grandson

Feb 12, 2012 19:34

Thanks to those who joined in the speculation concerning the youthful sailor and indeed the handsome civilian too.

The cute young navyboy is Raymond Dunsmore. He was from a farming family in rural Lincolnshire who joined the Royal navy aged 18 and was ranked ‘boy’ on entry at Portsmouth. He served on the Prince of Wales at the landings in Gallipolli in the small boats landing troops in the attempt to make a beachhead there. They came under very heavy fire from the Turkish forces on land and many of his friends and colleagues would have been killed. He served till 1919 and by the time he left had been an able seaman for 3 and a half years and was described as of “ very good “ character.

This is possibly a photograph taken on joining - his records show that he was at that time about 5ft 2 and had light brown hair and blue eyes. Raymond looks proud here I think - and very young. He left to his family the tale that he was “ blown up “ twice in the war. This was remembered by his grandson, who did not inherit the light brown hair or the blue eyes , though the genetic predisposition to handsomeness was not lost:

In one 'crossover'sense he is maybe the only Able Seaman to have the Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom for his grandson- well not quite !But esmerelda_t was in one sense close with option A.

Not a Pellew, though in many ways the Pellew.

Raymond's grandson is of course
