Galileo, Illicit Relationships, Terriers and Baseball

Some interesting stuff this week, all summed up in the title. Let's go in order, shall we?

Two Men of Florence at the BU Theatre. Loved it. The play was very... talkie. Yes. And kind of heady talk, no less. I'd heard some of our patrons say the play was "preachy". Now, the play was about the face-off between Galileo and Pope Urban VIII regarding the Aristotelian and Copernican ideas of the universe (in plain language... the center of the solar system being the sun or the Earth). Please tell me how a play about this can be preachy. I mean, if someone had geocentric ideals, then absolutely. But, c'mon now. Overall, I loved the play, although I do think the play itself still needs a bit of tightening up (it was the play's American premiere). Very good performance given by Edward Hermann, and award-worthy performance given by Jay Sanders. Above all, however, the visuals in the production are stunning. I am a sucker for a star drop, especially when used effectively, as it is used here. Highly recommended.

Blackbird, produced by the Speakeasy Stage Company. I found the time, as I discussed in my last entry. And, let me tell you: I'm so glad I did. One of the quotes on the board out front of the theatre says that the play sticks with you long after you see it.... and that is absolutely true. I can't say enough about the play, it was that fantastic. If I talk too much about it, I'll give away important plot details, so I won't. But I can't remember I time when I've been so creeped out, horrified and uncomfortable, but completely enthralled in a play - it was wonderful. I'd say HIGHLY recommended... but it's now closed (also, for clarification's sake, Blackbird involves an illicit relationship... hence the part of my title).

2009 NCAA Hockey East Championship Game, Boston University Terriers vs. UMass-Lowell River Hawks. SO MUCH FUN. Josh and I find our seats, to find that we are right in front of the BU cheering section, right next to the pep band. I... don't think I've had as much fun at a hockey game ever, and as you know, I have a blast at hockey games. Near constant cheering, chanting and singing, living and dying with every shot, missed pass and hit, jeering BC whenever possible (so what if BC wasn't in the game. That's irrelevant.). Loved it. To add to the experience, the game itself was a thriller, ending in a 1-0 BU victory (though... UML did score, it was pretty obvious, but the refs and replay officials claimed otherwise. Lamefaces.). I do think I'll be hitting up some other local games next season.

And now that brings us to today. I'm sitting at work, where there is very, very little going on... listening to the Sox game on Gameday Audio, part of my Red Sox Nation gift membership. Thanks Gram! I do think this may end up being my favorite gift of the year... given that I don't have a radio. Love it (plus, the Sox are winning as I write this, which is a plus).

And that's all I have for today. Tonight I plan on watching Team USA in the semi-final round of the World Baseball Classic, taking on the Japanese. For today only, Dice-K is evil. EVIL. And I shall root for his demise, to the tune of 6-7 runs in the first 2-3 innings. After today, he can go back to dominating. kthx. Go USA!
