Wondercon Draws Thousands
Last weekend thousands of people descended on San Francisco's Moscone Center for WonderCon, California's largest gathering of comic book writers and fans after San Diego's mammoth Comic-Con. While WonderCon provides a great way for writers and readers to connect, it also allows attendees to mingle with everyone from Chewbacca to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
"I see lots of aspiring writers and artists at WonderCon every year," said Red Room author Trina Robbins. "It's a chance for them to meet up with other writers, and to show their work to editors and just generally make connections. A giant once-a-year Red Room, if you will!" Robbins presented her lecture "Feral Women in Li'l Abner" to a packed crowd.
During his writing panel, superstar comics writer J. Michael Straczynski offered advice and answered questions from a standing-room-only audience. He also spoke briefly about several of his screenwriting projects in production, including the feature film adaptation of Max Brooks's New York Times-bestselling novel World War Z for Universal Pictures.
Hollywood actors Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny made a joint celebrity appearance to promote the upcoming movie sequel to The X-Files, and attendees were also offered a sneak peek of the film. Other actors also making promotional appearances at the convention included Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway (Get Smart), Casper Van Dien and Jolene Blalock (Starship Troopers: Marauder), and Thomas Dekker and Summer Glau (Fox's Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). Red Room founder and CEO Ivory Madison, the author of the upcoming graphic novel Huntress: Year One, attended as well.
