Tuesday after work, we finally got Peedy out to a disc golf course for his very first time. Ever since we all started throwing discs around back in September '05, we've given him the nomicker of "the best disc golfer who's never played a game." He's shy a vehicle right now, and since I'm giving him a ride home, I decided to kidnap him and take him along to a meeting with Kirk and Marc for an 18 hole funfest.
I had the best game I've ever played. I usually average 3 over par for a 9 hole course, but after 18 holes I only ended 1 over! By the end of the first nine I was 1 up, in the back nine I bogeyed again but a birdie dropped me back down to 1. While on the phone with Jamie I tapped in my final par on 18 to keep the score at 1 over. 55 for an 18 hole course. I was so stoked I was jumping up and down for a while before we heard the people behind us whistling at us to move away from the basket. LOVED it. Overall, I enjoyed this course a lot more this time than I did the first we experienced it. I was able to approach it with my previous time there as a foundation instead of other people's hype, and found the diversity of this course very exciting. I appreciate the lack of water on the couse, contenting in the fact that we won't be losing any discs (which some of us have already, gosh!). There's also a big variance in distance, tree placement / height / shape (so different obstacle to take into considerations instead of the all tall pines at TC Jester), and directional turns from hole to hole that keeps you playing different skills the whole time. Coming off the course I feel like I learned from my game instead of simply playing it. Again, fantastic time.
Marc was getting a feel for a new disc, so he had a ridiculously erratic game. Kirk did well overall, but he seemed to be playing a bit timid - his shots kept landing shorter than usual. Patrick, well, he wowed us. Throwing a disc back and forth in a field on a work break is one thing, planning strategically around tree obstacles and landing it in a basket is something else entirely. All of that included, he did FAR better than the rest of us on our first game. He parred several more holes than any of us expected, having some drives that exceeded our own, made some forehand putts that the rest of us goggled at the impossibility of, and just did fantastically. It was fun providing the occasional pointer and watching his performance sky rocket.
It was a great afternoon, ending just as the day's light was fading to dusk. May we have many more to come.
