It's a dream from years ago. Lyle can't be more than eight years old, still just a little kid. The rain drizzled down on him as he sat on a swing on the playground outside his primary school. They were there on a Saturday to celebrate some award Neil had won, for sports or something. Lyle thought it was pretty dumb, to be giving an award for sports.
He slowly pushed himself back and forth with the tips of his toes, feeling left out as much as he hated to admit. It hadn't been the first time this had happened and Lyle was wondering when he was going to stop caring. He raised his fist to scrub at an eye, even if he was already wet from the rain. His parents were going to be mad but Lyle didn't care anymore, he had had to get out of that stuffy auditorium no matter what.
"Lyle," a soft voice came from his right and he turned to see Amy standing beside him, holding an umbrella over his head. She didn't understand what was going on, she was only five after all. Lyle quickly made a move to scrub at his face again.
"Amy, what are you doing here? You're gonna get in trouble for leaving," He slid off the swing to take her hand and lead her back to the school. Amy quickly beamed at him and took his hand as she covered both of them with an umbrella and Lyle couldn't help but smile a bit back. His little sister really was adorable.
"I had to go find you!" She explained with all the enthusiasm of a girl her age. "You were suddenly gone and I was worried." Her face turned slightly sad. "I don't like it when you're sad, Lyle."
He flinched in surprise at that, how did Amy even know...? Then again, she was always smart for her age. But he didn't want to get her involved, he was supposed to protect her, not upset her by telling her all his problems. "I-I'm not sad, I just...had to get away for awhile," he muttered.
"Lyle!" Amy tugged on his arm to make sure he had her attention and she beamed at him. "You're my favorite twin!"
"Amy," Lyle dropped her hand as his eyes widened, horrified at what she said. But why was there a part of him that was pleased to hear this, after all Neil doted on her... Not that he was going to let her get away with it, he was, in the end, loyal to Neil. "A-Amy, you can't say things like that. It-it's not nice."
She pouted up at him, "but Neil is everyone else's favorite twin! So I want you to be mine so you can be a favorite too!" Skinny arms were thrown around his waist as she embraced him.
Lyle gently stroked her hair as she hugged him, wishing he could say how much he was glad to hear it. Suddenly he heard his name being called from a distance and he turned to see Neil and his parents waving at them from outside the school. He crouched down to her level, "Amy, you can't tell anyone what you just told me, okay? It would make Ne-...people really sad if they heard you say that."
"But-" Her face scrunched up in a pout.
"Promise me." Finally, she nodded and Lyle turned to acknowledge the beckonings of the rest of his family. He took Amy's hand and slowly started to lead her back to them, smiling slightly when she squeezed his hand extra tightly.
[Lyle rolls over in his sleep, coughing slightly]
