002 :: not one of the cool kids

So peer pressure dictates that I write a poem, given that Argent -- in his need to rage rage against the dying of the light when it comes to bumper cars -- has started a trend.  Unfortunately, I don't think I was ever one to follow the crowd, so I am remaining resolutely and unflinchingly limerick-less.  Never a sonnet shall leave this pen.  No ( Read more... )

Ah, you work for Vanilla-san now, Ran-san? I believe that makes us co-workers. It will be a pleasure to meet you face to face.

You, sir, are correct. I am the newly minted employee of Vanilla(-san?) and the bookstore. It's not enough to pay the bills, but it is enough to maintain my sanity while I grill kabobs three days a week down in the marketplace.

So. You must like books. Otherwise Vanilla wouldn't have hired you. Any favorites you can suggest for my first shift later this week?

Than I welcome you again. I am sure we will work well together, Ran-san.

I do enjoy books, yes. As to favorites? Harold and the Purple Crayon I believe something intellectual might suit your taste? What are you looking for in a book?

There are many I enjoy, though I cannot say our tastes run similarly. Still, for a good story I might recommend Anansi Boys or Good Omens. There's also a whole section of autobiographies I've been absently working through, some of which are quite exciting.

I'm sure we will.

I'm not all intellectual elitist about what I read; that, I promise you, Crow. In fact some of my favorites are found in the children's section. Call me a sucker for some of the classics. Le Petit Prince, Peter and Wendy -- perhaps we can spot a developing theme here? At the end of the day, books are books, and that right there is enough to get me interested.

Ah, so is it a matter of liking contemporary fiction -- given your recommendations? How about philosophers? Critical essays? Maybe even the odd field guide? Comic books? Me I like big thinkers and natural science, spattered with a bit of pointless humor and a side portion of children's books that point out how inane adults can be.

M'dear, any time you find yourself in need of a donutty fix, please let me know and I'll hook you up.

Do you still pay?

naoscaire August 23 2008, 04:35:27 UTC
So long as I have the necessary pocket change when you ask, yes.

Otherwise, I'll have to give you a raincheck until I DO have the pocket change, at which point there will be donuts.

Only if you promise never to pull a line like that first one again. A guy who refers to himself as a "rooster" and females as "chicks" -- in any context -- is not worth my donut-based allegiance.

Whether they're paying or not.

But some of us have two left feet. And dignity. Trust me, the party's better off with a few wallflowers in the mix whose sole purpose is to just stand there and stare and occasionally offer off-color commentary. Thus is the way of the world.

Yeah, only three days old and I'm already ready to pay my debts to society and start shelling out for a 401k. Seems I've underestimated the siren song of OWNING STUFF, which -- as trite as it sounds -- can sometimes be pretty darn swell.

How about you?

Okay. So you might have a point (or two) there when you put things that way. Walk your own path, beat of your own drummer, things weigh you down, you can't buy happiness -- all of those sayings, right?

I figure they wouldn't call them truisms if at least some part of them were true. So guess in the true department, you're definitely winning.

I'm Ran, by the way.

How long have you been here

I'm surprised so many people even tried writing poetry, to be honest. Who knew there were so many dirty limericks waiting for their chance in the sunlight?

Glad we could find you something, though. I couldn't get rid of my old clothes fast enough when I got them, so I can relate.

As long as there are drunken Irishmen in the world, and as long as teenage boys have access to rhyming dictionaries, there will always be dirty limericks hiding in the shadows, Bastet. This, I believe.

Now that I've found myself a job and what was I thinking quite possibly a way to lighten the load by way of domestic halfsies, I'm hoping to broaden my wardrobe horizons again and soon.

It was also good to get to meet you in person. You know, for a grown-up, you're not half bad. Which probably doesn't sound very nice, but trust me -- from where I'm standing -- it's huge.

Well, come back by any time. If I'm not there, Venus will help you out. I gotta say I'm impressed--getting a job and possibly a roommate this soon after getting here. I took the whole three weeks to find my job.

Then I'll take it as the compliment you meant it. Always nice to meet someone with some sense, and doubly nice that you're female.

I guess I'm restless? Being in a new place leaves me with excess energy and it's either that or stare at the wall listening to my hallmates wail about oversized animals all day and night.

I'd imagine that, given your cadre of companions, the smell of adolescent male hormones can get a bit overwhelming. Pheromones can only get you so far in life, Bastet, especially of the underrage variety. But I'd imagine you already know that.

If you work for Vanilla, then the answer is yes! I'm only working part-time and splitting my time between there and this kabob stand in marketplace central, but any opportunity to be around books is one I'm not going to let slide.

[ ooc :: the two of them should log some time, all co-workery-like. perhaps sometime next week if you're interested? ]

I can't count how many times I've walked past work while reading.

((I actually have the next two days off after today, which would be best, unless you want it to take a week or so?))

What're you reading right now? My library leaves something to be desired since I just got here and all.

[ ooc :: oof! right now i've got a lot of things on my plate, but maybe we can touch base tomorrow/monday again and see if we can make it work? ]
