Saying goodbye to Kassia was one of the hardest things Donna had had to do. If ever she had a daughter of her own she hoped she'd be just like Kas. Walking further into the market he manages to barter for some bread and some native fruit from the area. To him, nothing else looked appetizing, but he left Donna to her own bartering as he sat by the fence. Realizing he couldn't stand the idea of having Donna out of his line of sight, he pulled off a small piece of bread and tucks it away in his mouth.

She was fast-developing a mental Doctor Bullshit Detector. It was very useful.
Donna was able to barter for some bread and cheese, as well as some local mead. It did mean she vanished inside a tent for all of five seconds, mind.

"Get anything good?" He looked at her hands with great curiosity and pointed to the bottle, "What's that?"
Eventually, he realizes, they'll have to find camp somewhere. He couldn't speak for Donna, but he had his fill riding on a horse for the day, and the poor creature needed a rest too. Maybe they could find a real bed for the night?

"Mead. It's supposed to be good. Bread and cheese too. Have a sniff!" She practically shoved the bread under his nose.
"So, what's the plan? I think sitting on that horse has killed my butt."

They still had at least 2-3 days until they reached the TARDIS, which was much faster than what they traveled going to the emperor's palace, sadly enough.

To be honest, Donna was at the point that she would strip off in the nearest fountain if it meant getting clean. But it was easier to get mad than to admit how heartbroken she was.

He stuffs another piece of bread in his mouth before pushing up to his feet and walked off.

"Slow down, won't you? Blimey! I thought you were knackered, you're practically running!"

He goes back to the horse to pack away what little they gained at the market, took his jacket and set off to find the river. Along the way, he skims along the growing planets until he mananges to find what he was looking for, "Soap nuts! Nature's detergent!" A cheeky grin at his discovery, and not much farther did they find what they're looking for.
"If you're so paranoid," He notices some of the townswomen doing their laundry and children splashing in the water, "You can go down a bit aways... Just not too far, OK?"

"Well don't you go peeking..." She was definitely wary of stripping off in front of a crowd as she started to wander off along the bank of the river to find a quiet spot to wash in piece.

Finding a spot of his own, he slipped off his trainers and socks to keep dry and waded out into the river, up to his thighs and stood there for a moment. Funny how life continued on around him: the water still flowed, animals stopped for a drink and ran off, the townspeople chatted away as they did their responsibilities, time continued as it always had.
Finally, he does his best to launder his clothes, though the blood didn't come out completely in the jacket, but was certainly less noticeable, and settles them on a rock to dry in the sun.
After about an hour, his trousers at least looked dry enough to slip back on and he sat on the rock, quietly watching the scenery around him, waiting for Donna to return.

She kept dipping her toes into the water, watching the people come and go. At least they didn't seem particularly bothered by her state of undress.
