Donna wasn't sure what had pulled her apart from the Doctor - she had no idea if he was unharmed or even if he was still alive. He had promised, in those last few seconds before they were separated that he would find her, and all she could do was trust in him. He'd never let her down yet ( Read more... )

Donna set her phone down and rubbed at her tired eyes. "Archives at the nearest library then?" It was almost scary how easily Donna was taking all this in her stride. But probably for the best. The last thing Dead needed was a screaming, hysterical woman on his hands.

"Well, considering you just saved my life, I suppose I should find out your name so I can thank you..."

In Dean’s line of work there were two kinds of people. The kind that freaked the hell out and made things worse and the kind like Donna that took shit in their stride and waited until it was over to deal. Dean dealt by having sex and drinking copious amounts of alcohol. Everyone had their way.

He was very glad that fate tossed him someone like Donna. It could have been a lot worse. Unless she turned out to be a Sam girl then … it was a toss up.

“Name’s Dean. Dean Winchester.” He gave her a nod and a hint of a smile. “And who’s the chick that can toss off smart ass comments as well as throw iron at a ghost without batting an eye?”

Donna could get behind sex and alcohol as coping mechanisms. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. To be fair, in recent years there has been a distinct lack of both sex and alcohol - there has been a lot of hot chocolate though...

She returned the smile, giving a dry laugh. "Donna. Donna Noble. Believe me, I'm well versed in the weirder side of things."

That got eyebrows rising to the hairline but that also called for a beer so he pushed off from the chair he'd been in and over to the small refrigerator in the room. If Donna was looking when he opened the door, she'd notice that it was pretty much stocked with beer. He picked out two and handed one to her.

"How'd you learn about the weirder side of things?"

Nice healthy liquid diet then, Dean. Good to see the men of America taking such good care of their health! She accepted the beer with a smile, opened it and took a sip.

Now it was her turn to sound like an asylum escapee. "My best mate is a time travelling alien."

Well Dean had time traveled but with an Angel so he couldn't really cast asylum escapee stones at that.

"Alien is a new one but I can't really say anything with a life of demons, ghosts and supernatural shit." He raised his beer bottle in a salute. "So time travel huh? What year are you from?"

What he really wanted to ask was did it make you an insomniac and constipated or was that just Cas' time travel?

It was nice to not to be called crazy for once, and even nicer not to have someone give you the 'look' like you're insane without voicing it - that was the worst.

"He looks human - I mean he's not like a giant tentacle or sommat. But he's got two hearts and he's over 900 years old - looks bloody good for it though." She couldn't help but smile more. Talking about the Doctor was a joy - not that she'd ever admit it to him, his ego would swell too much.

"2011... So, how far off my time am I?"

"Only a year, it's 2012. Uh, you're not going to make something explode by running into yourself are you?" He knew that you could interact with family, he just didn't know how meeting yourself worked. Not that he ever planned to find that out.

"Don't worry, it's a paradox-free zone. No explosions, no matter vs. anti-matter and no making out with relatives. All safe. Probably best that I scrap my plans to head home though. Not that I've got my passport any way."

Probably best to avoid anywhere her future self might venture. "So, what's the plan? Sleep, library, shopping and then digging up corpses under the cover of darkness?"

Dean waved that aside, "you know I can get you a passport easy if you want one." Sure she might think that he knows someone that knows someone, but the reality was, it was Dean that was an expert at fake Government documents and IDs.

"And yeah, that's pretty much the plan. Sleep, library in the morning, research, buy what we need and me grave diggers. If we're lucky it'll be all in one day."

And hopefully the plan would include coffee - lots of it. And a clothes shopping trip. And food. Food would be good too! Especially chocolate - a giant bar.

"So then what? Ghost is laid to rest and you head wherever the next monster leads you? Is this your job or something?"

"The family business." Dean said with a nod and another sip of his beer. "That's what we do, hunt things and save people that don't know that things that go bump in the night, really do go bump in the night. What about you and your time traveling alien? What do you do when you go to a different time?"

"Family business?" Donna asked, watching Dean over the top of her bottle. "So there's more of you? Must be a pretty awesome family. My mum and I would end up killing each other if we had to work together." She loved her mum, but they didn't have the best of relationships.

She took another sip of her drink. "Me and the Doctor? Oh, you know, we save planets, rescue civilisations and run a lot..."

Dean ducked his head with a hint of a smile, "that would be my brother and dad that had arguments all the time." He could smile now, but while John was alive, Dean hated being the peacemaker in the middle.

When Donna continued, his eyebrows rose to his hairline. "Damn. Planets. That's impressive. I'm gonna guess and say the reason they needed saving didn't have to do with Apocalypses."
