*pounds chest*

Dude. I'm home from the King Kong screening and ready to kick Peter Jackson's newly skinny ass. Hear me roar!

Cut for a small rant about a Big Ape. Spoilers included free. )

I think Peter Jackson is not a talented director, so this does not surprise me. I realize I'm in the minority in thinking this.

R.I.P. Stanley Tookie Williams

Ah, I was wondering how that was going to turn out. Well, not so much wondering as anticipating the seemingly inevitable outcome. :\

Tookie: dead.
Kong: dead.
Brokeback Mountain: In theatres! Go see it, Eo. It's beautiful. And sad. Sad and beautiful. All the best things in life are.

I just went to see Syriana with skywaterblue, and we saw the trailer for Brokeback Mountain, which makes the movie look really dumb and sappy. I'm glad I have you to inform me of the inaccuracy of this trailer!

Also, I just went to Roger Ebert's site to see what he thought of Syriana, and noticed that he gave King Kong four stars! Perhaps he is dazzled by fanboyish Jackson love, or something.

Oooh. You're using your Doctor Octopus icon. I melt.

I am utterly perplexed by the good reviews for King Kong. Utterly. There are some wonderful moments, particularly between the big hairy guy and the little blonde lady, but it's so hopelessly FLAWED.

The Brokeback Mountain trailer bears no resemblance to the film! It's a laughable, sappy mess that tries to be "inoffensive" and only succeeds in being dumb, instead. And what did you think of Syriana? It sounds fierce and brave. I'm harboring a huge soul boner for George Clooney these days. There's no denying the Fred Friendly/Edward R. Murrow subtext in Good Night, and Good Luck. Mmm. Clooney slash. Hot, and with all the right politics. Good and good for you, like a vitamin-packed truffle.

I tried very hard not to laugh at the Brokeback Mountain trailer, for fear of people around me thinking I was laughing for evil reasons, not because the trailer was dumb.

Syriana was good, but the plot was too complicated for me to understand. skywaterblue had to explain it to me afterwards, and there were parts that even she didn't understand. I notice that Roger Ebert said he didn't understand it either but thought that was intentional, and that we were meant to be immersed in the incomprehensibility of the struggle for oil and the horrible things people do because of it. If he's right, then the filmmakers succeeded. It was also definitely well-acted and well-shot.

I don't know if you're squeamish, but I wouldn't recommend anyone see it who gets squicked by torture scenes, because there is a fairly brutal one in Syriana. skywaterblue had to cover her eyes.

(My god, I am having severe commenting issues. Forgive me.)

I really liked Syriana. I mean, it was depressing as hell, and yes, confusing, but it was like one of those mosaics where each little bit looks unrelated but when you step back you see a unified picture. It's more of a unified gut feeling, really. Fierce and brave, you betcha.

And woe, Brokeback Mountain doesn't appear to be coming here, at least not to the commercial chain. I'm hoping our art theatre gets it next month (year).

Yeah, I agree that Syriana probably works best as a right-brain experience.
