“Wilfred, calm down.” The Doctor was actually as agitated as the old man, running his hand through his hair till it stuck straight up. “What are you doing on this island?” Looking out, over the waves, his jaw dropped, and he walked down to the edge, of where the surf was lapping at the sand. Cold water came over his toe, but he was too busy staring at the sight in front of him.

Across the waves, there were thousands of great white fins sticking out of the inky water. They weren’t moving, just sitting there, like a fin audience all across the ocean. They seemed to be waiting, watching, to see what he would do. Wilfred turned to stare, as did Jethro, who had never seen Earth sharks and likely wouldn’t appreciate the humming of the Theme from Jaws, which is what the Doctor was doing as he surveyed the group.

“Oh…hullo! You, all…out there. I’m the Doctor.” He pulled his hand from his pockets to give them a little wave, and they all dipped, in unison, slightly.

“You’re talking to fish, Doctor.” Wilfred was next to Jethro, impatient to get back to the important task, which was finding Donna.

“Yes, and they seem to understand.” He was watching them, and they were watching him. Even for natural, high-end predators, they seemed positively…predatory.

The fins were getting closer, in a pattern that reminded the Doctor of the famous Spartan phalanx battle maneuver. But, of course, they were sharks, and couldn’t possibly attack on the land…or could they?

“I think we should have this talk in the TARDIS.” The Doctor took a couple of steps to the side, and the entire wave of fins moved with him. Suddenly, they all surged up onto the beach, each trying to push the others forward, snapping their massive jaws towards the humans, and thrashing their bodies to get closer, and closer, to kill.

“What the bloody…?” Wilfred was flabbergasted, even as he ran towards the blue box behind Jethro. “Attack sharks?”

Jethro threw open the doors, and they barely got them closed before they heard the loud THUMP of great whites slamming themselves into it.

“What are those things?” Jethro jumped as one, then another, thump echoed through the TARDIS.

“Great white sharks. Top of the food chain, well, save for whales. Can’t get much higher than that on Earth.” The Doctor was flipping switches and turning levers, then the TARDIS whined as it carried the three men away.

Wilfred dropped into a seat, putting his head in his hands. He was too worried, too exhausted, to even enjoy the idea of traveling in the time and space vehicle.

“Jethro, why don’t you go make us all a cuppa, while I find out what happened?” The Doctor nodded towards the hall, leading to the galley, and Jethro just obeyed, unsure of how he could help the old man who was shivering from cold and teary eyed. “Wilfred, tell me what happened. Don’t leave anything out, take your time.”

It took a while, because the Doctor would interrupt the elderly man with questions and details. Jethro brought the tea, and by the time Wilfred had finished, the cups were empty and the Doctor was silent, staring at the wall, so darkly quiet that both of the other men hesitated to speak to him.

Finally, Wilfred ran his hand through his thin, white hair. “Doctor, say something. Who was that man? That Harold? How could he and that woman take my Donna away like that? When the Doctor didn’t answer, he became more forceful. “WHO are they?”

The Doctor closed his eyes, shaking his head. This couldn’t be happening, but of course it was. Why hadn’t he seen it coming?

“There’s only one other person who could possibly have a TARDIS, and one Harold who would exploit it.” The Time Lord heard a bell going off, a signal transmitted on a frequency that Gallifreyans knew well. It was happening, far sooner than he had ever imagined. “The Master. The Rani. Together.”

Grimly, he rose to answer the call.

“They opened the rift again.”

“Rose Tyler. Martha Jones. Astrid Peth. Gwen Cooper. Oh, let’s not forget Jenny.” Donna walked in front of the five women, who were all bound to examination tables in the Rani’s laboratory. “You will be the first of the breeding program for a new race, a new generation, of Time Lords. The Rani and the Master will decide when your service is finished. I’d like to tell you that it won’t hurt, but it will.”

The Rani turned to the Master, and murmured softly. “You seem to unleashed her dominatrix side, Master. I thought you preferred the more submissive type.”

“Rani, I’m exhausted. I’ve been collecting these women from all over galaxies, including reconstructing the one with nannogens. Don’t annoy me.” The Master was secretly proud of how Donna had come along. Her sadism was a delightfully entertaining change from the norm for him.

The alarm went off, and black clad soldiers marched to take position as a familiar whooping sound began. In a few seconds, Donna was smirking, brushing hair out of her face, as the blue box materialized on the upper deck of the large, echoing laboratory. It appeared right beside the Rani’s own TARDIS. The door opened, and a hand stretched out, before a man in his jim jams stepped forward.

Donna rolled her eyes, and shouted. “Grandad! What the hell are you doing here? You’re going to ruin everything!”

Behind Wilfred Mott, the Doctor came out of his ship with Jethro behind him. The Doctor saw the bound women, taking in his companions and daughter, hostages in this war. In Martha’s eyes, especially, he saw pain that made him wince. This wasn’t fair.

“Donna…what have you done?” The Doctor stepped in front of the old man, and noticed the Rani and the Master, in his new regeneration.

The Master walked over, his chin lifted in a haughty manner, his sneer open. “She’s done everything I told her to.”

“Master.”

“Doctor.”

“Rani.” The Rani shook her head, and sighed. “Now that we’ve had Time Lord roll call, let’s get to it.”

“How? I watched you die.” The Doctor stared at the Master in disbelief. “I burned your body. I saw YOU DIE!”

“Poor Theta. You really don’t understand, do you? I was reborn in fire and blood. My mind, spirit, everything, stored in a transportational device. That body wasn’t me, I had already transported everything inside to the one small bit of tech.” He held up his ring, smiling. “All I needed was enough Time Lord DNA to regenerate myself. I found it, on Bad Wolf Bay.”

“The other me.” The Doctor spoke quietly, looking to Rose, who nodded in confirmation.

“That was when I began to collect your leftovers.” The Master gave a sweep of his hand towards the women. “They will breed my new race of Time Lords. You were right. Destroying the Earth, when I can rule it with my own progeny, is much more satisfying.”

“And I will rule by his side.” Donna stepped up to the Master, smiling broadly.

“Donna…no. Master, she’ll burn. Her head…”

“Is filled with all your knowledge.” Donna took the Master’s arm, and he beamed at her, then back to the Doctor. “Everything you know, I know, Doctor. Everything. I’m the Doctor Donna, and I know everything you did to me, and to my darling Harry. Now, we are going to make you pay for your arrogance. You thought you could turn me into some ninny, wipe my mind clean like a child’s toy you shake and it’s blank? No, Doctor. You were afraid I would far more than you are. Thanks to Harry, I am everything I should be.” The soldiers came forward, and locked binders on all three of the men, as Donna slipped the Doctor’s sonic screwdriver out of his pocket. “You won’t be needing this any more. Ever.”

The Master’s expression of satisfaction was enough to cause the Doctor to feel a deep sense of rage. Jenny struggled against her bonds, seeing the look on her father’s face. This was not how they were supposed to be reunited.

The Rani began to laugh, and the Master chuckled along with her. The Rani pointed at the Doctor, her long nail bright red, like an arrow dipped in blood. “No more. No more clever plots. No more drawn out drama. No count downs. Kill him. Kill him now, and we’ll use his DNA for copying. Kill him.”

“Yes.” Donna Noble urged the Master forward. “Kill him once and for all. End this.”

Final chapter coming soon….
