The Strangest Thing

I just experienced one of the oddest (and fairly alarming) sensations. There was something wrong with my right field of view. I was just laying on the couch reading when I noticed a "spot" in my vision like you get after looking at a bright light. Instead of fading, this spot spread out and moved (kind of) but at the same time changed nature to... something else. After a few minutes I could not really focus on anything to the right of center. I could still "see" that there were objects there, but it took intense concentration to pick up anything specific. It seemed to affect my right eye more than the left, but closing my right eye did not fix the problem. For about five minutes I was completely unable to read, being unable to focus on more than one letter at a time. My vision returned to normal suddenly only a few moments ago. I had already planned on making an appointment with an optometrist to correct my contact prescription but now I'm worried there might be something worse wrong. I wish I knew what caused it so I could prevent it happening again.
